Tracking App for Android to Keep The Missus Happy When I Ride Solo Mtb Trails at Night

Hi All,

Due to not riding to work everyday and walking up/down 10-20 flights of stairs a day my conditioning has evaporated to the point I start to puff wheeling the bike out of the house, time to get some K's in the legs again!

I normally don't like riding alone but there's a few trails not far from home I could do, but it would be dark when I go. Have ridden a lot at night in my xc race days so riding in the dark no issue, so the tracking app is merely to keep ye olde ball 'n' chain happy :)

I notice Strava has live tracking but only for iPhone (boo!), Ride with GPS looks to only allow the live tracking with a $60 per annum account.

Any free live tracking apps out there anyone can recommend? Doesn't have to be specifically cycling, just tell the missus when I am - and only has to be working during the ride.

Thanks for any advice!

Do you and your partner each have a Google account? I'm sure you can use the location tracking feature on Maps so you can see where each other is and turn it on and off as required.

yes we do! ok, will check that out now, that would be perfect!

update - yep - works perfectly - too easy, thanks!

  • If on android you could enable something like their find my phone kinda thing. She could login to the google account and ping it? I haven't looked too much into it though

Whatsapp allows you to share live location for set periods. Easiest and freeist option.

If you had iOS devices, you could use the Find My app as well.

Facebook Messenger livel location share lasts 60 mins. Works Great. Plus you know when it's transmitting your location, so you can be sure she won't see you pop to the shops to pick up all those OzB deals on the way home.

    • good to know and may also try it, just found out google maps also has the ability to set the time limit for sharing, yeah if there are BWS or Thirsty Camel specials to 'save on' after the ride, want to keep this on the down low!

Not too sure what it's like as I haven't used it, but relive looks good. Not aware if it is real time sharing or if it just renders a geographical video of the trip though.

  • You may as well sign up for UberEats, Menulog and Deliveroo and make some money out of riding at night. Maybe you can share your location or something…

  • Is this to check that you're alive or that you're not at the girlfriend's house?

    • I'm more of a voyeur but the ankle bracelet is a constant reminder to not go breaking
      all those restraining orders!

  • life360 is free

Maybe also consider an EPIRB so if you're deep in the sticks and come off hard you can get help without having to try and dial numbers.

  • Coercive control is now a crime in many states.
Tracking your location at all times you are out of the house is concerning.
    You can get help.

Not sure if serious. If so, there’s a risk of crashing riding mountain bikes at night. a live tracker allows the person at home to check where you are if you don’t arrive back after a pre determined time. “I’m going out for a ride, back in an hour” type thing.

      • Its dangerous to go out at night, on your own, in this neighbourhood, without me…
All lines used by abusive partners.

Totally agree with you. Control like that is bad. But if I’m a responsible adult I’d like my partner to know where I am if I’m riding solo in case something goes wrong.

Well before live tracking and smart phones I bought a phone for when riding solo in the bush, this a logical extension to increase safety.

          • @Euphemistic: Totally, objects appear flatter at night with helmet lights so while I have 150mm of travel, the chances of an unexpected object causing me some grief is greater. Don't want to bleed out alone on the trail!

    • Thanks for the reach out but all above board for the use case as described.

  • I often use Graticule

    https://graticule.link/

I have found Google maps location sharing just isn't actually realtime. Not sure about Facebook or other apps, I don't think I'd want to share identifiable location information with them anyway. The Graticule one doesn't link to anything, so it's pretty much anonymous location sharing updated every second. You just send someone your tracking link, then start our stop your app as needed. Easy to reset the tracking link if you don't want that person to track you anymore. Also includes some useful information like speed and altitude etc, so someone could tell when you're in struggle town going up those hills.

  • Life360 for sure. No doubt. Exactly what you're after. For free

  • google maps, WhatsApp, Waze, all have this built in

I know this well because of friends who share links for ALL THREE whenever they are on the way to meet anywhere and I get a barrage of messages, emails, and notifications to let me follow them in realtime and know when to put on my pants.

    • I get a barrage of messages, emails, and notifications……

personally I think spam would be more exciting

      • You wouldn't be wrong either

    • Sounds like an earful but I like that you have a Pants Alarm!

  • If you have a Garmin watch, you can use the live track feature. Who ever has access to the link can see how you progress/where you are.
