[QLD] Mobile Phone Use Detection Cameras to Be Permanent

This topic was raised previously:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/516036 but ABC is reporting that the cameras to catch drivers using mobile phones, and/or not wearing seatbelts, will become permanent:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-07-08/qld-police-cameras-ca…

Apparently the fine for mobile phone use will kick in after a 3-month grace period and will be $1,033 from November, along with the loss of 4 demerit points.
No seat belt will cost you $413 and 3 demerit points.
The cameras will be moved around and the locations not advertised.

IMO, drivers just need to stop using their phones, and fasten their seat belts.

good to see people donating to the government coffers.

    • Unfortunately those people who don't use seatbelts or drive with a mobile phone tend not to care about fines or the amount, as they rarely have to pay them.

There are worse forms of taxation than large fines for idiots putting lives at risk. In QLD we do have a bit of a state budget problem. Maybe enough revenue can be raised to keep a ward open in a hospital? Maybe it will be enough of a deterrent it will reduce ramping by ambulances?

I reckon people that say this is a revenue raising venture are right. People who think it is a deterrent are also right.

I guess unless you are one of the many that like texting or calling with their phone while driving, we should be happy.

I just wish they would fine Toyota who made my Bluetooth in my late model Corolla sound like I am calling from under the sea.

People who say that need to look in the mirror.

If you don't like the "GoVeRnMeNt revenue raising", stop breaking the god damn law and making it so profitable for them. Seriously.

This, exactly. It's not a fine, it's a toll. Here are the rules, play within the rules. If you want a shortcut to not play by the rules, there is a toll to pay. Traffic fines by their nature are an "opt in" scheme.

People always seem to screech "rEveNuE rAiSiNg!!" But are never prepared to stop donating to their government's slush fund.

I could understand if the government made it near impossible to find the traffic laws or made them full of legalize gobblygook, but they don't. They even go so far as to make you read over them, they then test you to make sure you have read them and have you sign a piece of paper to say you have read, understand and will abide by them. Yet for some reason this forum is still full of "I broke this road rule, iT'z nOt fAiR, how do I get out if paying?"

      Yes and no.

      Good to see the donating.

Not good to see the potentially deadly driving habits.

    Good.

Can’t wait for the influx of “Help I just got a done by a mobile phone detection camera” threads.

    • Doubt it, considering we've had them for a while now in NSW…

Tyranny can be measured by the number of laws imposed by those in power law

    • +3

Do you really think that the enforcement of the existing laws / road rules is tyranny?

  • +10

You can buy a basic dock for your phone from around $10. So no excuses.

    • -4

      Sorry, against the law.
You may not view a VDU (Video Display Unit) whilst driving. Drivers have been fined for looking over at their passengers phone.

      • +1

In Qld you can use a mobile phone as a phone or GPS device while driving provided you use a handsfree or headset. That is for P2 or open licences and it can't be hand held.
P1 have restrictions that they cannot use any phone functions while driving (Passengers of a P1 also can't use the phone's loudspeaker while the P1 is driving). But as I understand it they can set a playlist/destination while they are parked, that can continue while they are driving (ie no touching the device)

        • +1

As long as you can not view the screen. Read the law.

          • @OzyRad: So by a "video display unit" you also mean a GPS unit? How about a car that has a radio with a display built in?

Here's a tip. GPSs are not illigal.

      • +1

If this was the case, why don’t more people get booked for simply having those 8” touch screens most cars come with these days?? (Because road rules says it’s ok…)

The law does not define a phone as a VDU. You can use your phone in a vehicle providing it is as a drivers aid (ie: GPS or to change songs or to accept/reject calls) providing it is in a purpose built holder attached to the vehicle (ie: not in your cup holder, on the dash, on your leg, under the sun visor etc.) (road rule 299, 2, b, ii and road rule 300.)

If we have learned anything the past year it's that there is a sizeable percentage of people who like tyranny, add to mix daily fear updates and they won't just tolerate tyranny, but demand it.

I have no idea what your statement has to do with this forum post

Are you scared when you leave your house?

Let me guess, you’re an anti-vax, anti-mask, just another flu, government doesn’t tell me what to do, it’s about mind control, trump was robbed, Scomo is a Chinese spy, Bill Gates nano-bot vaccine, I WaNt To SpEaK tO yOuR mAnGeR kinda guy?

InB4: “well if you’re happy to let the government tell you what to do…”

          • @pegaxs: I didn't know Scomo was Chinese spy?

        • No, why would I be?

    Job Keeper/Seeker - payback scheme

    • +1

Except these fines go back to the state's coffer not the federal where the Job* schemes are from.

      • -1

All the same sh*t. They all sleep with each other

  • InB4: tHiS iS jUsT rEvEnUe rAiSiNg!!

  • And all these laws are doing great at lowering the road toll!

    • +3

I think they are as well, so, well said.

Just imagine how dangerous the roads would be if there were little to no road rules. One only has to drive around most south east Asian countries to see how dangerous roads without road rules really are.

Most idiot drivers in Australia can't even abide by the rules we have, so how do you think it would go if all the road rules were just removed overnight?

InB4; YoU'sE aRe aLL jUsT gOvErNmEnT bOOt LiCkErZ

  • clearly we need mobile phone laws.
but gonna have to add a dashcam pointing at me, in case i happen to hold some object that looks mobile phonish… and/or show context.

I've been booked for not wearing a seatbelt 1.5 times, when I was.. so yeah.. shoulda done it a long time ago.

  • p.s. pollution kills way more people than phones/seatbelts in australia.. sends many 1000s to hospital.. but we don't enforce car smog checks or ban fireplaces in suburban areas etc… but i guess these deaths are old people and sickly children so who cares
