What Do I Do with a $50 iTunes Apple Gift Card That I Have Redeemed? (Doesnt Seem to Work for Family Sharing)

Hi I bought a apple iTunes gift card $50 so when i redeem it will automatically go to my family sharing account. Well it doesn't. My children bought some games and it went through my credit card instead of my gift card.

This is what it says , " You apple id balance is used for each purchase first untiles it reaches zero. The payment method below your apple id balance is used for purchases made by family members. Tap edit to remove a payment method."

It doesnt let me remove my credit card. So i have apple id on top and credit card on bottom.

What options is there ?

  • Sorry to hear. It’s always been like that. I redeem cards into each of my children’s accounts because of that.

It has also derailed some school BYOD programs too.

Do you have Family Sharing configured on your family member's iCloud accounts?

In my family, I have configured iCloud Family Sharing so that my wife and children are linked with me. If anyone purchases an app, then everyone in the family can use the app for no additional charge.

In my iphone, I go to iCloud (at the very top), then Family Sharing and I have added all my family members. There is also a "Purchase Sharing" option with a button that says "Share Purchases with Family (Allow family members to see and access your purchases)".

This is a good idea. Turn off the ability to purchase anything on your kids phones and buy what they want on yours. Then they can download it on their phones. You also then make sure they don't buy something stupid or fall for in-app purchases that target kids.

        This.

Buy everything through your Apple ID, everyone in the group can re download for free.

  • Best way to spend is, just send it to my account

  • Just found this:

[Apple ID balance can't be used for some purchases
You can't use your Apple ID balance to send gifts or gift cards.
If you use Family Sharing, your family members can't spend your Apple ID balance. Funds that you add to your Apple ID balance are available only to you. Learn more about how purchases bill to your Apple ID balance.]
