  • LOL was really amused to read this morning that the Australian Government is paying $698 per set top box (even after excluding administration costs). Should totally just talk to BigW and give everyone free TV's which have the thing built in at half-price! O_O
Fail Gillard/Conroy. Ozbargainers should be running the NBN/government vote-buying schemes - we could save millions!

think that's a wonderful idea. The government gets ripped off left right and center and our taxes are paying for it!

      • +1

Indeed - think of it this way.
For every dollar you pay in tax, you're getting 2 cents back under this "schism"
Here at ozbargain we pay a dollar and get 1.80 of value.
Therefore simple maths tells us that ozbargain would improve efficiency by at least 9,000%.
        THATS OVER 9000!

        • +1

          +1 for over 9000

    • What a lot of BS. That cost is not for a STBox.
This one again! The Right have taken a budget allocation for all TV antenna, cable, STBox/satelite installation, installation fees etc for welfare households no matter how far from the CBD they live, divided it by a small number of possible recipients, and made up a beaten up figure… presented as the cost of a STBox!

If you did that with everything else, we would not do a lot of things. (eg Taxpayers are being robbed by the elderly & sick - last year of life consumes most health spending - maybe some culling of aging or terminally ill?? Making everyone live in uniformly designed tower blocks in designated cities / corridors (I've visited those in my travels - same size spaces makes it cost effective for service delivery & same sized appliances & furnishings), while closing rural towns would save a fortune on road maintenance, transport, health care, planning, flood mitigation & drought assistance, and other services. We choose not to live like that, so there are extra costs.)

OK it will be a waste, and there were better ways to do this, but there was an argument that not turning off the analogue transmissions was going to cost a lot more. It would be a good idea to do more research behind BS stories before repeating them like talk-back radio.

lol? no matter how you put it $700 is ridiculous?
It's got nothing to do with left or right - it's got to do with value for money
and how ozbargainers could achieve it way cheaper!

I could fly all the way to Japan and deliver + install a set-top box to some poor guy who got hit by the tsunami, buy lunch, fly all the way back across to the pacific, purchase a 32 inch TV for myself with set-top box included and still have change for the ridiculous Brisbane Airport parking fare - at the same price.

As an ozbargainer I hate seeing money wasted lol - that is all. Don't care for politics, just productivity and efficiency.

The point is it is not the cost of 1 STBox - it is upgrading the TV reception (providing satelite & Box/ STBox & antenna, cabling, installation, instruction, travel costs, labour costs for 2 workers usually, etc), of many rural households not just city dwellers like you & I. Rollout has been in the country areas so far.

The figure is incorrectly presented as the cost of 1 STBox. So it is a political beat-up, which has been pushed by the Right before.

As for calculating costs, if you included all the development costs in the first unit of a product produced, you would never produce it. Costs are easily overestimated in isolation & are based on different assumptions depending on your point of view. The costs of this scheme are to satisfy the TV stations by my reading - part of an industry package to keep them sweet in the changeover period. Maintaining & running analogue & digital transmitters around Australia is a large expense for the businesses & Government through ABC & SBS. A Government kept putting the changeover date back & industry had to pay the extra cost. Its all political.

I am all for efficiencies & savings!
Can catch the Bus from Garden City to the Brisbane Airport for $1.22 (driving across the toll bridge would cost $4 just for the bridge) - so that is a saving over multi-day parking charges! But cheap flights to Japan fly from Coolangatta. Flight from Brisbane Airport would cost about $1000 each way, and you would need an expensive Japanese digital TV STBox, so that blew the budget. ;) (I get your point.)

(Recently visited rice farmer friends in rural Japan [Jetstar $400 return] & saw the mountains of CRT TVs after the change over date to Digital. In a time of greiving & fear of job losses, people must consider what TV to buy, so they don't offend friends who have family working for a particular company. My friend has bought 2 brands, but only lets friends see the one their family works as! One farmer was irrate about a $600 fine for being caught dumping his TV in a river, instead of paying the recycling fee. Maybe he should add that Government charge to the cost of his expensive Japanese digital system.)

I know Engineers steer clear of politics, thats why I upset the faculty at UQ when pointing out the corruption of the Qld Government of the 70's.

  • Is this that much better than the JB 31.5" for $199 (obviously not Full HD or LED)? Is it worth paying 50% more? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/63273

    • My question also.
      FULL HD
      LED
      2 yrs Extended warranty ($30)
Free Delivery ($?) (Small enough to carry home if near JBHiFi)
      HDMI cable ($10?)
      Worth $100 (50%) more???

  • Perfect size but I'm after a pana, Sony, Samsung or lg with full hd. Hope one comes around Soon
