Which Free Software to Sync Two External Hard Drives?

I need to keep two drives in sync. The second drive is for redundancy. Any suggestions?

  • Maybe Sync Center, which should come pre-built in to Windows?

    rsync

    FreeFileSync

    • +1 for that. The speed of file copy with FFS is just incredible.

  • I use SyncFolders with a re-occurring job set up to run each night.

    copy and paste.

Are the drives always connected and on when the computer is? If they are (and assuming you use windows) just make a software RAID1 array via disk management.

RAID should never be considered a 'backup' though…

Although if the OP is not looking for a cold storage solution, a good/simple RAID solution is Windows Storage Spaces. Works irrespective of the PCs that the drives get moved to, and still accessible if one drive goes offline (not always the case with other RAID options)

        #raidisnotabackup

      • Op never said anything about backup though. Just a redundant disk that is in sync (aka the literal definition of a RAID1 array)

  • Syncbackup free
