If it's homework at home only for remote learning you should probably just get a second hand desktop computer e.g a refurbished Dell Optiplex, Lenovo ThinkCentre or similar.

You can get a decent 4th gen or 5th gen Core i5 / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD machine for less than $300 and it'll have be much snappier than a budget $500 laptop (which will at most, have some kind of dual core Celeron or AMD APU)

    Some recent examples

If you do need a laptop for school consider hitting up the Dell Outlet for refurbished or as-new units. https://www.dell.com/en-au/outlet but you should be aware that laptops in the sub $600 range typically have a lot of compromises, mainly battery life, CPU performance, and sub-par display resolution.

    Graysonline sell Lenovo Refurbs.
Prices fluctuate pretty wildly, but bargains in this price range can be had even after the Graysonline extortionate 20% and shipping fees are included.

  • What sort of homework we talking about? Typing essays? Drawings? Uni homework? High school?

Laptop at that price range may have specs leading to laggy or unresponsive experience with Words and Internet browsing etc

Hard to recommend one crappy laptop over another. Although if she just need something, after lockdown ends go to JBHifi and try them out.

    How about a Chromebook?

This one can be used as both a laptop or a tablet

    • Officeworks has Chromebooks as well - good to get a feel for them in-person if you're not used to the OS.

They run Android apps too, which works great with touchscreens!

      • OP will need to check the Chromebook allows her sister to print

  • Acer, because if she breaks the screen, they are usually less than $200 to repair.
Avoid Graysonline. I have bought from them before, and have issues with warranty, and the 20% makes it near to buying new.

    Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5

It's small, light, but very comfortable to use. You can turn it into a tablet. It's never going to be as powerful as an expensive laptop, but for general internet use, watching videos online and word processing, it's great.
