Those are costume masks and offer zero protection from airborne disease. Might as well just lift your t-shirt up over your nose.

The one I liked was a picture of a mask under the chin.

    • I just saw a few of them on Ebay.

      • Yeah, I spotted those too… seemed to me like a good way to provoke unnecessary, but justified, annoyance in others, when they inevitably mistake you for a maskhole before they realise they've been tricked.

Saw a dude wearing a mask on his forehead yesterday.

Not relevant to this deal I just want to share.

Breathable design, you will not stuffy with it.

Probably not triple layered and therefore for vanity only and not useful protection. I get you think they are funny, but COVID is not a funny illness. Please, wear a suitable mask.

    From https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/

To ensure adequate protection, cloth masks should have at least 3 layers of fabric:

The outer layer should be a water-resistant polyester or polypropylene fabric such as a reusable supermarket bags (not plastic) or exercise clothing

The middle layer should be high-grade cotton (such as bed sheets), polycotton (such as quilting fabric or a t-shirt)

The inner layer should be high-grade cotton (such as bed sheets) or polycotton (such as quilting fabric or a t-shirt).

    • What size particles do these 3 layer masks filter effectively?

      • I've no idea, do you?

        • I've no idea,

Exactly, neither does anyone, as they are all made of different things. They need to be able to filter down to about 1 micron to stop anything containing a virus, which I doubt any of these cloth masks do.

On top of this, the vast majority of people would have no idea how to wear it correctly, further reducing it's already poor efficacy.

          • @brendanm: SARS-CoV-2 has a size ranging from 60 to 140 nm, so will easily pass through bed sheets, t-shirts etc.

Tests using an N95 mask, a 3-ply surgical mask, and a home-made mask from a tea cloth provided that the N95 mask provided 25 times more protection than a surgical mask and 50 times more than a homemade mask from tea cloths.

@BOGOF: And besides, it's not supposed to be filtering nanoparticles out of the air. It's more to minimise the distribution of aerosolised droplets containing the particles so that the number and spread is lower.

Most exhaled virus is not literally a single virion - it's in a drop of spit many orders of magnitude times larger than the virus.

            • @BOGOF: It's not the size of the virus, it's the things it's attached to when you breath/talk etc, 1 micron seems to be the accepted size for this.

But yes, pretty much proves that masks are stupid, as the ones people use are ineffective at best, as well as the fact they aren't worn correctly.

      Can be a literal di**head?

    • Classic. LOL.

    • That's just nuts! I wonder how many people are shelling out that much to wear balls on their chin? They could've just downloaded Grindr & done that for free, if we weren't in a pandemic… ;)

    Hi,
But unless it's a face shield, medical grade one or fancy filter nozzle one (to the side not near mouth) - I thought 90% of the reason they're worn is for Other people that you will breathe onto or put out particles - Not for protection for yourself?

    • I've been doing some research about the filter nozzle ones, & I've found that some of them actually contain a filter which covers the exhale valve too, thus filtering the exhaled air as well, although this seems to vary from mask to mask…
