Cheapest Go Kart to Buy and Run

So I really love riding the ride on mower at school it is honestly a lot at fun because I don't drive and honestly am a bit nervous driving properly following road rules and being the correct speed and all that.

So I just dream about riding go karts and ride on mowers.

I looked online and found that golf karts very expensive so I ruled them out and just whittled the list down to ride on mowers and go karts.

I found a ride on mower under 2k but go karts seem to be cheaper at under 1k some even under 500.

They do feel different but I'm just looking for the lowest cost option at the moment to own and operate meaning fuel and longevity and repairs etc.

I am posting this thread in case anyone knows what is the lowest cost option for a hobby toy basically I can ride around in the backyard or at a friend's large multi acre backyard.

I jokingly bumped into a website for ride on cars for kids you know those electric toy model cars usually for small kids and honestly thought about it but the weight limit on those toys would be below 110kg so that's a no for me otherwise price wise they were the best but not size wise and weight limit wise obviously.

So I'm wondering if anybody here knows much about this hobby sector or knows what might be the cheapest vehicle or toy as I put it to purchase and operate to just ride around on a large field or paddock etc.

I know all of these things cannot be driven on footpaths.. I think even bicycles can't even share space on a footpath in some places but I love the thrill of riding a vehicle or toy around so I want to buy one to play with immediately.

Also anybody know what the registration and requirements are or might be for owning a go kart.

Thanks.

Yeah I should just get a cheap throwaway car but driving on the road is not only more expensive but requires more work so is less fun but I did think about just getting some $500 car and using that instead on some race track or friends farm land.

Sounds like you would love an ATV or quad bike. Not sure if you can get them that cheap but maybe have a look at used ones.

They're fantastic fun on the sand at Stockton Beach as well.

If you want to stick to roads and/or no ICE, Segway have a go-kart kit that's quite highly rated. Might be worth waiting for prices to drop or again look at second-hand market.

    • Oh man I am dreaming about it now but those things are expensive to buy so I'm looking at the cheap low cost options for now.

Wanna start small.. I might kill myself with a wrong flip on a quad bike lol.. Risk of rolling very high maybe I'll start with something that has a roll cage.

    • Wait I can ride this go kart kit on the road?

      BTW what's ICE ?

      • +1

ICE = Internal Combustion Engine (ie: runs on fuel)

    ICE - internal combustion engine

Go kart you need a trailer and a car
How else are you going to get it to a track

Can't really take a go kart in a back yard unless it's concreted

Go karts are for the track and you pay fees for the track

Its not a cheap hobby and if you only want to spend $500 and no budget for tools, no maintenance cost factored in, you should stick to a push bike or the PS4

  • VR headset and a driving sim? :D

Sounds what you actually need is a motorbike or dirt bike.

  • I have a friend who has a non-mainstream branded quad bike which does the job for this. I have done research in the past and have found that this group of companies provides very entry level makes and models for small quad bikes and dune buggies Dirt Bikes and Quads

    • Don't remember the price but was comparatively low in the market, Have a look at something like the ATOMIK RAMPAGE 150CC

      • Thanks for the information can't find any prices on that website but I'll have a closer look later.

But if the cost of this toy is more than an actual cheap car I would have to pass on it.

That's why I'm really only aiming for go karts or even ride on mowers atm because I know for a fact that you can get them below $2000 then you just gotta add petrol to the cost and that's it and maybe some registration fee or go kart license but I'm not sure I haven't gotten that far yet.

Quad bike is nice though I see some people ride them standing up and I'm mostly looking for sitting down vehicles or toys as I did a few standing up stuff like jet ski and others before and after awhile your legs go stiff and numb from absorbing all the shock and suspension.. No doubt fun though but anyways I feel like I can't get a quad bike under $1500 so unfortunately no deal due to low budget.

        • Most of the time you sit on a quad bike. Stand up for rough terrain.

You will need to learn to drive, because whatever you choose it will need to be transported to where it can be ridden.

What if I just leave it in a storage nearby or even store it at the race track or area?

Yeah if i need a pick up truck to transport it then this idea kind of gets tricky.

  • +1

Where do you intend to drive/ride? Using a go-kart or other ride on device in most public spaces is probably nearly as expensive in fines as driving a car unlicensed.

Once you determine where to play, get something for that terrain.

    • Either at a friends large farm or race track or other approved driving grounds and hoping they might have a garage or some sort of self storage place nearby or on premises where I can keep the ride and just take public transport to and from that area.

      That was the ideal plan.

I do not plan to get a car license any time soon to get a pick up truck to transport the equipment and if I do then I guess it does not matter what I do as I can transport it anywhere it is legal to use/drive which I assume is certain race tracks where you might pay a fee or large compound or farm.

Anyone tried messing around with a go kart or ride on mower in a large empty car park?

      • If you're planning to ride it at your friends farm only have hit asked them if they have a garage and don't mind storing your kart? And that they wouldn't mind you riding it? It'll probably get expensive every time you want to move it as you'll have to hire a guy with a ute etc

        • Yeah that's the plan.

My friend has a huge farm he has to upkeep so I can chip in and help him out if he wants as payment for his generosity.

And maybe someday I'll find some cheap 1 bedroom 1 bathroom place with a big backyard or farm that I can buy or rent and then ride on mower and go kart any time I want to my hearts content.

That would be the life. I just have to find a place with no rodents or wildlife because that would be my only real deal breaker besides no internet.

          • @AlienC: You need a buggy, not a go kart.

Buy something electric, far less maintenance.

            • @Euphemistic: What would be an example either from ebay or other website that sells cheap buggies

Just trying to get a feel of which vehicle you mean

              • @AlienC: No idea. My idea of a go kart is a low slung thing for race tracks. A buggy has tyres more like a quad bike - big fat round knobbly things, and probably has a roll cage of some sort.

                • @Euphemistic: I plan to drive it at a soccer field or farm.

Have messaged a few sellers on ebay asking them where they drive it and one said at a nearby soccer field.

This was for a $900 go kart.

If it makes any difference they live in western Sydney.

I planned to kind of do the same thing at a local field that is very large and I think used for many things and has cricket nets among other things.

That or maybe find an unused no through road.

                  • @AlienC: Stock to the farm. Driving on a local field will cost big $ if you get caught.

                    • -1

@Euphemistic: Oh damn so it's not legal?

                      • @AlienC: It's your 40th amendment right to ride karts on soccer fields!

                        • @Ughhh: I mean if a bear poops on a pope in the woods who am I?
