Buying a ute for under $5000 WA - What to look out for?

Heyo,

I'm looking to get a manual ute in WA under $5000 for the long run. Uses will involve human transportation, transporting stuff, L plate (for my boys- to and from school and learning manual) etc.

I'm currently looking on FB and Gumtree. Would appreciate if I get an idea of what to look out for such as brands, year, km, private vs dealership etc. Will be taking a friend mechanic if we like a car and are gonna buy it.

Thanx!

Have you tried asking your “mechanic” friend what they think?

You are not going to get much ute for $5k. Maybe an old 2 door, 2wd, tray back, most likely a Triton, Rodeo/Colorado, Hilux or Courier. It will probably be a 2000~2006ish model with 200k+ km on the odometer. At that price range, it is going to be a beater.

You probably won’t find a $5k ute at a dealer unless it’s a shifty, shit car yard that specialises in old shit boxes.

    • Mechanic suggests a few brands but just wanted to ask the community before I refine my search. And somehow ur on point - exactly those cars are being listed at the price: 200k+, 2000+ model… I'm surprised. Thanks!

As above $5k won’t get you much. Do you want well body/tray back, single/dual cab, 2wd/4wd, diesel/petrol
    Basic rules apply:
    1. Pick something there is a lot of around.
    2. Something in this price bracket I’d prefer kms and condition over age. Ie better condition but older.
    3. Petrol will be cheaper to buy and service/repair.
    4. Expect faults, learn to live with the ‘character’ of the vehicle.
    5. It will be slow and bouncy.
