Home CCTV System Suggestions

Hi everyone,

lots of deals pop up on here but hoping to have real world experience with the systems posted.

I'm looking for 4K recording, PoE preferred, facial recognition preferred, dome style, can log in from app reomtely to view and NVR with HDD installed etc.

This is winning so far https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/392984298658?&autorefresh=true

or from Shopping Square https://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/p_436942_Reolink_4K_Securiā€¦

Open to Eufy, Arlo or Ring etc, but Reolink, Hikivision seem best value and not cloud based subscriptions.

Budget would be around the $1000 if possible

I prefer Reolink cameras connected to Synology NAS. However, depending on how many cameras you need this might not fit your budget so you might have to go with Reolink NVR which I have no experience with and therefore cannot recommend.

  • BTW have you accounted the installation cost into your budget or are you doing a DIY? It is not fun running CAT6 cables specially if the house is already established or even worse if it is a double storey.

    • for those considering doing pre-wiring for a new builds do you have any tips?

    • I will DIY. Have tall ladders and happy to go in roof for cables. Have done a system like this years ago.

  • Avoid Swann. The software looks and works like it was made in the 80's. Absolutely terrible.

A friend bought this Reolink https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/293273457538 for a new build late last year.
Very impressed with the picture quality and the mobile app, interface is very very solid for the price range too.

    • Looks good!

    • That does look good.

  • First of all OP do your own research, you are asking for everything.

How many cameras do you want?
Costing for your own cloud backup ? vs subscriptions?
    Wireless/battery power/solar or wired?

4K recording, PoE preferred, facial recognition preferred, dome style, can log in from app remotely to view and NVR with HDD installed etc

That's not feasible with $1000 budget.

Something like Hikivision, you need your own NVR + NAS. then you need to manage your cloud/external backup for 4K content.

Perhaps stick to Eufy, Arlo or Ring, nothing wrong with the subscriptions.

  • Eufy and Arlo are good consumer grade solutions and the picture quality is amazing these days.

Hikvision to build your own. One or two standalone is fine if you just want to be able to "have a look", everything else you mention will require a server of some description, PoE switch etc.

  • Eufy is toy security. I don't have an Arlo system so I can't comment but I suspect that it has the same limitations. Go hardwired if possible.

At home I have the Eufy 2C cos hardwired wasn't feasible for me. I actually agree with this. Excellent on a budget and in certain circumstances, and I'm happy with it - but hardwired has a tonne of advantages if you can do it.

    • yep agree…i got the door bell since it's handy for deliveries, as well notifying me on my phone when I'm at the back. Prefer reolink over eufy but wish it had better automation with google
