Suggestions for a 14 Inch Laptop Budget $2200

Good morning to everyone.

My son has just been accepted into the Navy and he is allowed to take a laptop with him. So to celebrate his achievement I was going to spend up to $2200, he has settled on 14 inch for practicality. I guess he will need it for some study and online work but mainly watching Netflix, YouTube etc. A webcam would be handy so we can chat while is away. He plays console games but has and can play PC games. We are based in Brisbane.

Any suggestions would be most welcomed.

  • What percentage of use will be gaming?

Which titles does he typically play?

    • Basically everything from dark souls to COD, Forza, AC…..first-person shooters and RPG's

So it's going to be used for gaming too?
They're aren't that many gaming laptops in that size.
I would recommend an Asus G14, excellent size, battery and value, however it doesn't have a webcam.

        • The webcam is more important than gaming tbh. The laptop will be for general media with games as a bonus if possible.

          • @Socialsuicide01: That's fair. I guess Razer laptops could have both but I think it's outside the budget.

            @Socialsuicide01: Consider G14 and a Logitech webcam.

Which not to mention, any add on webcam will be worlds better than the ones that come with a laptop in most cases.

        • The 2022 G14 might rectify the webcam issue, but does anyone know the expected release date?

          • @xdigger: Unsure. My guess is probably pretty late given the latest G14 was only released early this year right?

    Congratulations!
For those requirements you wouldn't really need to spend even half of that - for that much you could be looking at a gaming laptop, all laptops have webcams as standard these days.
Search through the laptop deals and look for those with a high rating and see if any of those sound like what you are looking for.

Yeah, i have done but then i fell down the rabbit hole of review videos and got lost along the way. So i thought id ask real people with experience and nonbiases.

  • budget and $2200?

    • Its a gift to reflect the effort my son has put into his acceptance to the Navy, Submariner! Btw im a nurse so it is a substantial amount for me but i thought it was appropriate.

You might have misread it. His budget is $2200.

  • Perhaps consider a slim 15” like the Vapour 15X which will probably be a similar size to most regular 14” laptops.

Seems to get some good reviews. For around $2200 specs can give you:

    i7-10875H
    165hz 1440p panel
    RTX 3060
    16GB RAM
    1tb SSD NVMe drive
    Windows 10 Home.

If you prefer you can always buy a cheap windows key and save paying $170 for it. Plenty of instruction online for that.

    • Thanks for the reply, but at 15.6 inch it is too big.

I mean you’re probably talking around 2cm when it comes to actual width of the laptop.15.4” is diagonal, so it’s not 3.5cm wider than a 14” laptop.

14” for practicality doesn’t make sense. I can show you 14” laptops that are bigger than 15” laptops. I can show you 14” laptops that are smaller than 13” laptops when it comes to overall footprint.

        • Fair enough, overall size is more to the point, you are right on that. I had approached it from the obvious pov that 14inch is a convenient size for portability and what the Navy would accept as not being ridiculously big. I had just taken screen size into account and nothing else.

Consider dropping to 13” and you’ll have way more variety. 14” are just not that common so trying to get everything is hard. Razer does a 14, but it’s very expensive.

  • There was an Acer i7 that Bing Lee has on Ozbargain atm for @ $1439.

One plus with Acer, are they don't usually rort you if the screen needs replacing (ie cracked=non-warranty).

    • Onboard graphics though - will struggle greatly with AAA titles.

    Asus Rog Zephyrus G14.

    Huge battery life
    Strong graphics and processor.
    Within your budget.

    • No webcam unfortunately which was addressed above

      • A pity really,
I guess Asus thought they were trailblazing when they got rid of it.
        Covid had other ideas.

        • Yeah it’s kinda weird in any case, like I get privacy concerns and all but it’s also not like there’s a huge bezel that it didn’t fit, and they’re probably in the order of $1 to manufacture so unsure if it was a cost thing either.

    • Can't get the 2021 version anywhere though
