When Is It 'Safe' to Give Your Notice Period to Start a New Job?

I have been offered a new job where their recruitment have told me that it's okay for me to submit my notice period now.

However I have yet to sign the contract and the only two confirmation emails I have is that they will contact my references, want identification and that I can submit my notice now.

When is a good time to submit a notice period?

When you have signed a contract.

Yeah, I wouldn't risk it before that unless you're on very good terms with the outgoing company.

Agreed including when you have set a start date with the new employer to commence new job

Couldn't agree enough with this. Speaking from personal experience, if you don't put pen to paper and have a signed a contract, I wouldn't proceed with terminating your current employment. Have been burned in the past like this previously.

      • Man that's brutal. Able to share more of your story?

I went through the application process, many steps later interviewer and recruiter had a very positive response and said I had the job. I was a naive teenager with little experience then so I left my job at the time to pursue this opportunity with what I thought was an excellent company.

A month down the line they contacted me saying they "wanted to hire internally" instead. Felt awful at the time but it worked out in the end. Found another job with another awesome company and life goes on. Lesson is unless it's a formal contract, everything a recruiter or employer says is just hollow words and empty promises.

      /thread

    • In addition, the new employer has received and acknowledged it.

  • Well, if you have listed your boss as a reference then you might want to inform them so it comes from you not Joe Bloggs at xyz company asking what you're like as an employee.

    • Nah no references from current company

Surely OP has 'warned' the nominated referees already.
That is different to submitting your resignation.

some recruitment out there you can not trust.

hey dude; its one of those things that is probably fine but I have always waited till i have a signed contact before submitting resignation; a number of reasons for that; not least of all its good for you to be able to read your employment conditions in black and white before resigning from the current job.
I'd send a polite email to the recruiter/hiring manager that you are really excited to start with the new company and that to be able to serve your current notice period of 2/3/4 weeks (or whatever it is) that you'd appreciate a formal contract to review so you can submit your notice to current employer etc.

Don't risk it. Not easy to get a job now.

What? Have you looked at the job market? It is booming.

As long as you don't work in retail or tourism etc. Everything else is just taking off.

  • I have never resigned before signing a contract and having a start date agreed on. Don't think anyone should be doing it any different tbh, too risky

  • Never mind that… can I have your "Old" job? I'm local and OzB c̶e̶r̶t̶i̶f̶i̶a̶b̶l̶e̶
    friendly :+)

I have been offered a new job where their recruitment have told me that it's okay for me to submit my notice period now.

Its not up to them to say when it is 'ok' for you to quit your job.

However I have yet to sign the contract and the only two confirmation emails I have is that they will contact my references, want identification and that I can submit my notice now.

Ok, so you don't have a job with them YET until you sign a contract.

When is a good time to submit a notice period?

Once you have a signed contract in your hand.

Agreed on the contract in hand advice.
Call them and say you hope they can get you a contract ASAP so your notice period won’t cause any delay.
Then it is on them to hurry up, not you.

    Thanks all for comments.

I contacted the recruiter on when should I expect the contract and they said EOB Wednesday. So I'll wait until then.

  • Yeah wait for the contract.
