Best way to spend Flybuys, Velocity, Amex and QFF points

Hi,

I will leave Australia for good in 2-3 months and I still have heaps of points to spend in the following:

  • Qantas (more than 100.000)
  • Flybuys (90.000)
  • Velocity (150.000)
  • Amex (almost 100.000 not transferable to QFF)

I guess for flybuys the best would be to use for groceries… But what about the others?

If that helps, I would like to buy some camera gear before leaving (A7III or A7C and a DJI Mini 2).
Travel is out of question as I live in Sydney and in lockdown. Also no need to use them for the plane ticket as it is already sorted.

Happy to listen to any ideas you might have.

Thanks in advance.

(PS, I hope it is the right forum to post)

      Nah,
I do not have many friends here, hence why I am leaving :)

Depending where you're moving to, likely classic rewards with One World partners still the best way to spend the Qantas points.

    • It is going to be Europe, so not sure which partners they have there. Will check thanks!

      • They partner with BA in Europe

        • Just notice that's pretty interesting. How do you usually book the Oneworld flights? Through Qantas website?

          • +1

@ets27: You can also book with their non-oneworld partners, like KLM, AirFrance. BA have really bad fuel surcharges (it was 100GBP + points for an inter-Euro flight I just checked) but some of the other airlines are pretty good (American Airlines have no surcharges and Iberia charges about 25 EUR + points for Madrid-Paris, for eg).

            • @funeste: Thanks! Do I need to create a One worls account? Or should I book just throught the Qantas website?
Just trying to figure out how to use this.
              cheers

              • @ets27: Just book like a normal Qantas flight - it'll come up with a message saying you're going to another country's website but it'll still be Qantas.

                https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/use-points/class…

                • +1

@funeste: Awesome. QFF sorted. Now the rest (Velocity, Flybuys and Amex) :)

                  • +1

@ets27: Amex should be able to transfer to airlines too.

Velocity… Go the same route. European partners. Alitalia or Virgin Atlantic… Depends on where you want to go.

  • There might be more economical ways, but i'd just convert the flybuys points to flybuy dollars now and spend it at the supermarket/bottle shop as you normally would. Save your real money for the move.

    • I was thinking about gift cards also, not sure how good the conversion would be though..

      • +1

Its fine if you want to buy something from those stores. Same conversion really.

        • Awesome!
Is there a list of the GC you can find at Coles express?
          Tried but couldn't find it..
          Cheers

  • Merged from Best use of flybuys points

Hi, I have a fair bit of flybuys points to use. Apart from groceries from coles, is there any other better use?
I read somewhere that you can’t buy gift cards in store but you should be able to at coles express or Kmart..is this correct?

    Cheers

    • Flybuys website has a Rewards Store page, showing all the items available and exchange Points value.

Best option is wait for specials and promos offering Double Reward value and or Cash/Points splits. They have the full range of money off your shop, to book travel and Gift Cards available as well.

      • I need it to do urgently as I am leaving Australia.
The best option for me would be to buy GC to get stuff I need .
Any ideas of it can be done?

      • How often do they do the double reward value? I've never heard of this. So if I had $100 it would then be $200?

    • +1

I have successfully redeemed flybuys for coles myer gc in kmart at self checkout. Max is $100 value card at self checkout. U might be able to get higher value cards at manned checkout but never tried this. Hope this helps.

      • It helps, thanks.
Any ideas if I can buy from Coles Express too? I am in lockdown in Sydney and not able to go to Kmart anytime soon I guess.

        • +1

Yes to any stores accept flybuy dollars and sell it, except Coles.

    • +1

Anyone else think it's effing nuts that you can't just use the points for online shopping directly? Bloody stupid

      • +1

        100% agree.
If you don't want groceries then the GC options are ridicolous and in-store only.
And the prizes from the rewards store are way too overpriced.

      • +2

If you get flypay you can use them for online Coles purchases but in $50 lots only.

  • Sell for cash.

    • Flybuys??

      • +1

        Buy coles cards and sell.
