When to Buy a RTX 3070?

Hey guys,

I’m a novice when it comes to the computing world, don’t really know much about the latest tech and got no clue about the pricing.

I’ve just purchased an EGPU and would like to attach a 3060 Ti, 3070 or 3070Ti to it. I’m seeing a comment trend of people saying to wait to buy it as the price will come down, how long will that be And what can I expect to pay for these.

As of now the 3060ti has been going up for 850 and 3070 1200, are the performances much different for the price?

Please help this noob x

The current market has high demand and low supply due to semiconductor shortages so the prices are significantly inflated. It's anyone's guess when this will rebalance back to normal levels but unlikely by the end of the year.

The 3070 is about 15-20% higher performance than the 3060 Ti with a main difference in a higher shader count at 5,888 vs 4,864. What are you using it for in an eGPU?

    • To be honest mostly gaming, but I will be using it for CAD, Electrical circuit simulations and some engineering stuff.

3070 is about 17% faster than the 3060ti

Price is relative, you need to determine what price you are happy to pay and when you need to buy it.

personally i wouldnt pay more than rrp, however the more desperate you are the more you may need to pay.

Userbenchmark is not an accurate platform to measure such information as stated above. Most users who have benched on there before, don't even overclock or ensure their system is running at an optimum state before benching.

GPU manufacturers could easily extend this situation by as long as they want to by working with distributors. Its impossible to know when.

Im currently holding for one, but if nothing pops up by November Im pulling the trigger, Ive set myself a time and gonna stick to it

    Welcome to OzCrystalBall… take a seat :)

  • Which card depends on what you want to run. Price depends on how much you are willing to pay/wait.

Do you use a 1080p screen? If you do, get the 3060ti. And yes Underbenchmark is an awful website to look at benchmarks. Here's the review for the EVGA FTW3 Ultra I have purchased. It offers a pretty comprehensive FPS and benchmark comparison (legit ones like 3Dmark) for the RTX range. You can have a look.

I use mine on a 1080p screen, total overkill. The only benefit is that I can match my FPS to my refresh rate on every competitive game I have tried. I bought my EVGA FTW3 Ultra at $1100 from PLE so I wouldn't say $1200 for a RTX3070 is too bad (not great either). Of course, not all RTX3070s are the same and the quality varies.

    • I’m using it for my 3440 x 1440 screen haha. I didn’t know how much the graphical performance would differ after using a much higher resolution screen compared to my laptop. But I mean I should have seen it coming. Day to day activities are good but apart from that gaming is a no go

The 3060ti is fairly reasonably priced at the moment. It's meant to be $688 for the founders edition, usually the various brands price their cards a little over that for RRP, so the ~$850 that's popping up isn't terrible. It's then your decision, how much is it worth to save $150? Preorders at $850 were for two weeks from now, so probably over the next 3-4 weeks it won't drop much below that as stock releases (most retailers don't do preorders, they just sell when the stock drops). We might start seeing preorders into September more around the $800 mark (but then again, OzCrystalBall, maybe there'll be a new covid variant that shutters manufacturing, or bitcoin prices will skyrocket, or whatever).

    The 3070 is $809 and the 3070 ti is $959, the 3080 is $1,139.

Paying less than RRP probably isn't going to happen this year, since all manufacturers are saying they won't have supply this year, I think that's pretty much the only thing you can be assured on (again, who knows, crypto bust and flooding the market with second hand cards would change that). The 3070 and 3080 are the most in demand cards, because they're the best cards for 1440p and 4k respectively, so it depends what you want to do. 3060ti is a perfectly reasonable 1440p card but doesn't quite have the future proofing. The 3070 can also pull off a bit of 4K gaming on older titles too. That 10% extra frames can be all the difference between annoying and enjoyable.

So, long story short, the 3060 ti probably won't get much cheaper. It might a bit, but if you're selling an old GPU used odds are that will fall in price too. The 3070 and 3080 might see larger drops because they currently have a 50% or higher premium, so more scope to fall, but are in the most demand. LHR versions should push it back down a bit. The 3070 ti will probably hover in price relative to the 3070, because it's a bit of an oddity card where it's not really much better than the 3070, not enough to justify the premium.

    • Considering my monitor is 1440 p I will probably go with the 3070 now based off your comment! Thanks so much haha and I will see if the prices dip within this region again I might just pull the trigger :)

Where from? Those prices are really good. Are they $US?

      • Those are the RRP prices of the founders editions. Good benchmark for how much we’re overpaying

Depends man, if you want it now just buy it, if you want to save money then just like any other product you have to wait, can't really say when in current conditions.

Samsung is increasing wafer prices. this news story published about 4 days ago:
    https://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-foundry-to-hike-wa…

Samsung manufactures GPU's for Nvidia so this will have an upwards push on the prices of GPU's

What GPU you buy is mostly dictated by the refresh rate and resolution of your display. I run a RTX3070 (non Ti) with a 3440 x 1440 @ 100hz and I haven't played a game that greatly stresses the GPU. Have tried Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding and Doom Eternal and they run great, probably run even better if there is DLSS 2.0 support or FSR.
