Sounds like your car is worth $28k.

In my experience, there is little difference between car yards unless you are buying from them and trading in; they will sometimes then increase the trade-in rather than discount the new purchase.

A good video here that actually that seems to describe OP’s situation and may help. Gives an idea on the thoughts behind people selling their cars.

Subaru will only offer me 28k for my 35k car

You do realise they might want to make money reselling it?

  • +6

Any car yard will be offering wholesale price as an outright buy.

If you think the car is worth $35k then go through the process of presenting the car at its best and sell it privately.

Also factor in the fact that if its worth 35k and that's what they ideally want to sell it for, then GST will automatically have to be deducted from the sale price when calculating what they'd pay you. After that they've got to factor in margins, so there's literally no way anyone would give over 32k, without having a guaranteed loss.
I'd say 20% under private sale price is fair, and as mentioned by others, the dealer will be more willing to work with you if you're buying from them too (you haven't mentioned), maybe 15% under market . Always sell privately for max $$$. Subaru however is one of the better dealer networks for trade-ins so I don't think you'll get much more
(I traded in with Subaru @ a Syd Dealership in 2016)

Thank you for your helpful comment. This is just an outright sale, no trade.

      • Nps. Curious to know what car it is. That could seriously determine what would be a better option.
(i.e. a hilux vs a captiva, hilux would be a private sale all day, captiva would be a trade-in)

who says your car is worth $35k?

    • Redbook

      • So I’m looking for a car heard that will give me the redbook trade price.

It should be at the top of this range as it’s in excellent condition with full Subaru service history, tow pack, all options, new tyres, just serviced etc

  • my 35k car

Is that your private or car dealer trade price based on your research?

  • just sell it privately?

  • My price compared to other private sellers in the market (just asking prices).

    Dealers sell for 40k.

I’d be happy with say 32k.

I’m just looking for a used car dealership/yard that will give 2k more than a Subaru dealer.

    • Just keep trying. You might get lucky, but most likely you aren’t going to get what you want. Dealers want to make money + you don’t want to do any work or just want it done quick = low offer price.

Every car yard is going to be different. They may not want your type of vehicle. They may have enough stock, or find they don’t make enough money in buying from private owners. There’s a bunch of reasons that they’ll use to offer you low.

      • Agree.

        2 options:

        • Put in a few hours effort and get your price
        • Drop off car to a dealer and pay the lazy man tax

Have you tried Carsales Instant Offer? A friend got a reasonable offer from there, but I understand it can be hit and miss.

  • +1

During covid, many sellers are asking a lot more than their car is worth. So you'll be able to sell it for $65K .. "because you know what you've got" :P

  • do private sales on carsales to get the price u want

    • +2

Almost every time. But the buyer is out of phone range on oil platform/military service and will send their agent if you can just pay the courier fee by western union first.

Why don't you get off your arse and sell it privately instead on whinging on here why they will only give you $28k, it's a hot market due to shortages if it's a decent price it would be gone in a weekend

    • It’s on car sales asking $35,990, listed Thursday night

  • Redbook value

    Private Price Guide $34,700 - $38,200
    Trade In Price Guide $30,300 - $33,800
    *Average Km 80,000 - 130,000
    *Price When New $48,240

    Price Guide (EGC)

    Mines a top example.

Just looking for a dealer that would give me the redbook range is Brisbane.

    • You probably won’t get any shortcuts aside from asking individual dealers.

Interesting that carsales didn’t give you an offer. Indicates there may be less of a market for your car than you think. I suspect carsales lost the details to a bunch of dealers and see what they offer, then lass the offer back to you. Carsales probably won’t actually buy the car, they are middle me.

  • Carsales instant offer

“Unfortunately we’re unable to generate an Instant Offer on your car right now and need a bit more time.

As a guide, you can expect the offer to be in the range of
    $29,600 - $34,800“

    • +1

So they don’t want your car.

    • 29,600 is more than the dealer is offering?

Why don't you let Carsales come back to you with an "instant" quote?

      • They eventually came back with $25k…

        Was worth a shot though

Should be alright. Wont take long to sell a car for 30 privately when dealer is offering 28.

Considered trading in a car earlier this year. Dealer offered 7k. Declined, and sold it for 13k the same week. Had more enquiries coming in at 14k which I couldnt be bother.

  • +1

considered auction? set a reserve of 28k plus auction house fee

    how many kms on it?

    • Good idea, I’ll check this out

You mean like Pickles or similar?

      85,000

      • Yep, should fetch a pretty good price with kms like that
