Switchboard Upgrade - Likely Cost and Recommendation

Hello everyone - We are looking for some advice to get our switchboard upgraded. As you can see from the photo link below it is very old and we have been told to upgrade it. We were hoping to know the likely cost and if someone can recommend an electrician. We live close to Box Hill in Victoria.

That should be in a museum.

Switchboard will be cheap compared to rewiring your house and if the wiring is the same age as that switch you will need it.

The cost is usually around the 1k mark but as per above that looks VERY old so may need more work for the wiring etc.

    • Thanks. Any idea on costs for rewiring a 2 bedroom house? There are perhaps 10-15 power points.

    Wheres the meter?

I have one of them. It was 700 more to upgrade when I got a private pole installed with new wires. The Old wires to the house could barely run a modern kitchen.

No chance OP is getting that done for anywhere near $700.

Looks like possibly 11 circuits, so there's around $300 for the RCBOs and then you are looking at $200ish I think for a new enclosure. So there's $500 in the main parts before any other misc things.

I'm not overly familiar with what domestic sparkies are charging for this sort of stuff down in Vic, but I wouldn't be surprised if the price is upwards of $1500 for a decent job. If the house needs rewiring then that will balloon right out. Given all circuits need to be RCD protected now, it's also possible that the HWS and oven could need replacing if they are old and have iffy insulation.

OP, ask around on your local community FB groups, friends, colleagues, etc to find recommendations for electricians, then get 2 or 3 out to quote the job for you. Beware of the likes of HiPages, they sting the tradies with fees and the in demand tradies won't need to go anywhere near it.

I am an electrician (in Cairns though). Please be aware that board has what appears to be asbestos lining. Ensure your electrician handles the removal appropriately.

Sorry I cannot give you an approximate price as I don't work on domestic properties.
