Need Advice on A Discontinued RTX 3080 GPU from PLE

Ordered a PNY RTX3080 XLR8 in January (non-LHR ofc).

22/1: went on 30 seconds after the email (5:08PM) was sent and bought it whilst it was still "in stock" (5:10PM). Kept refreshing the page after and it was still "in stock" till about 3 minutes more after I made my purchase. So I was super happy that I got my card.

24/1: email saying "your order is delayed due to stock being unavailable". I'm like seriously I made my purchase whilst you guys were still "in stock" for 3 mins. Checked my line in the queue and was at the front so didn't bug me much as eventually, the next shipment will come to me first.

7/2, 19/2, 19&28/3: your order is delayed…

march: During march, my order went from backorder -> awaiting processing -> *being processed -> backorder. Was told later by a staff he believes it was a system error that occurred to a few orders on this card

28/4, 5/5: your order is delayed…

30/5: Shared my concern that I won't get mine when LHR models were released. They said they "can't confirm until they have the card in their hands" but assured me that "Currently your order is the oldest without a fulfillment"

16/7: They offered to give me the non-LHR version. I was like cool don't need to mine. The catch was it cost $450 extra… Why would I pay more for an LHR model? dismissed that email straight away as I thought it was a joke.

11/8: Tells me my non-LHR is discontinued and offers me an LHR one for $200 more. Was in a meeting and left the meeting early just to write this. They should be giving me back $200 for the non-LHR model and causing this much trouble.

Keep in mind I'm a full-time student that gave $1.4k away for 7 months (i only earn ~$220 a week). Was hoping that I could actually use a better GPU for gaming and help my engineering simulations as I'm running an rx560 currently. I remember riding 5km to MSY and center com every morning to check if they had any 3080s. What should I do or how should I respond? Any advice would be good.

All they owe you is a refund. Get your refund.

      • +7

You purchased it, as soon as they said there is a delay you could of asked for a refund. You made the decision to wait for stock, no-one forced you to do anything.

All you are entitled to is a refund.

      • why?

What do you think they owe you?

    • -2

Yeah might go with this tbh. Retailers are at the mercy of their suppliers, so not really PLE's fault, other than advertising in stock when it wasn't and their processing problem

      • +7

Why did you copy someone's reply to your exact same post on reddit and then pretend as if you are taking the high road??

        • not taking any high road mate. Trying to take as much advice as possible and make the best decision.

  • Thank you for sharing your experience with PLE. Will avoid this merchant in the future.

PLE were actually one of the few stores that didn’t jack all their prices and spent a great deal of effort on stock updates - honestly won me as a customer for life

This guy just thinks he is entitled to free stuff because he couldn’t see the writing on the wall

      • +1

Maybe that is true but getting people to wait since January with no or little prospect of product fulfillment is neither right nor is it fair.

Would you like that sort of customer service yourself?

      • No I'm complaining about the whole exp. I was the one that informed them about the writing on the wall which they assured me it's a different SKU and wouldn't affect my order.

  • I had the same wait issue for a Rx 6800 XT from Hardly Normal, I was waiting for months with no end in sight.
    I got my money back.

    …gave $1.4k away for 7 months

    $1,400 @ official rate of 0.25% for 7 months = $2.04

Ask for a refund and $2.04 in interest.

    • haha. we'll see

  • Damn, get a refund. If they offered you the LHR version (I see its in stock lol) for the same price or less, then that would be good on PLE's part but alas, no.

  • +1

Feel for you bro considering you waited so long. I suggest you send them what you wrote up there first (if you still want the 3080) if not then ask for a refund with ionterest compensating. Imagine if you put 1400 into cardano ada in jan…

Imagine if you put 1400 into cardano ada in jan…

What sort of demented logic is this.

      • +2

Imagine if I found the biggest gold nugget in the world.

    • yeah thanks for understanding. Haha, I didn't know about Cardano till Feb but I wouldn't never have put such a large sum either way.

  • I was also in the queue for an RTX with PLE since January and cancelled my order a month ago when it became clear they were never going to be able to supply it.

Is it shitty they held your money for 6 months? Yeah. But bank interest rates are 1% at the moment compounded daily, so you could argue for about $7 in interest. It’s not part of the agreement though so I don’t think they’d pay up.

    • thanks for empathizing man

There was plenty of computer stores that allow per-orders without down payments. Only down side they lack options in AIB, you take what you get. Also claim only offering 1 year warranty but personally easier to get warranty from AIB or use ACCC when time comes to it.

    • no offence but everything you wrote is wrong IMO.

plenty of computer stores that allow per-orders without down payments

Not with GPUs since last year.

      only offering 1 year warranty

Even the worst 2nd tier GPU brand offers at least 2 year warranty

personally easier to get warranty from AIB

go to the store you bought from = show receipt, they deal with everything for you including shipping and contact manufacturer
get warranty from AIB = find their support email/phone, waiting on the line(or email reply), back and forth checking condition and receipt, pay for shipping, and keep waiting

      or use ACCC

You can only file a report to ACCC when a shop is refusing to provide any remedies (refund/replace/repair)

Not with GPUs since last year.

Got my from D & D Computer Technology and many of local store offer this option. So … This was early Jan. Please go check your information and get back to me. Not sure about now but as I am no longer looking for it.

Even the worst 2nd tier GPU brand offers at least 2 year warranty

Pretty sure it just website default 1 year warranty. Like I said it not really a large issue.

go to the store you bought from = show receipt, they deal with everything for you including shipping and contact manufacturer

get warranty from AIB = find their support email/phone, waiting on the line(or email reply), back and forth checking condition and receipt, pay for shipping, and keep waiting

What if store is not local? You would still have packaged and shipped to retailer and they basically the middle man between you and manufacturer.
I don't know how you communicate with manufacturers, I just email telling them exact issue with all documentation upfront. It usually take 1-2 max email for them offer shipping label or shipping information for me to send it back to repair center. Shipping is small price to pay for 1 k+ GPU …

You can only file a report to ACCC when a shop is refusing to provide any remedies (refund/replace/repair)

        Calm down …

Keep in mind I'm a full-time student that gave $1.4k away for 7 months (i only earn ~$220 a week).

Please learn to spend your money wisely. You bought the wrong card.

    • +1

Yeah. Well was definitely worth a try considering I was probably one of the first to buy it. So not really the wrong card until those incidents. Should've pulled out after March tbh

  • -1

Honestly in state of current market $200 more is not a huge premium to pay. Albeit you won’t get to offset card price w crypto over newt few months so it kinda still sucks

  • +3

This whole thing sucks…. but I can't wait for next years post….

The 4080 is out and I'm still waiting for my 3080.

    • Hopefully I'll have something before that. Hope I don't see anyone as unlucky as me with the process

    • i wonder if they'll drop the price after the 4080 comes out so instead of paying 1400, you pay whatever it is when you get it and the rest is refunded back or used for something else? Thats assuming the the 4080 will drop the prices of 3080s globally…

      • If history has taught us anything, for the most part, the answer to that would be no. It might come down slightly, but not signifantly. They'll discontinue what falls off price wise and raise the price of the higher end - Pay more to get more. Of course there'll come a limit to what people are willing to pay… That all being said, competition will be the reason they'll alter prices.

But that's just my guess and my crystal ball is on the fritz at the moment, so who knows?

        • It might come down slightly, but not signifantly.

A lot of people seem to think this way, as soon as the new gen drops, they reckon there would be a significant price drop in last gen so should be much more affordable. But then again, I haven't personally tracked any of the higher end cards of every gen to see if this is an actual trend or if people are talking out of their ass to get people to wait longer till the next gen drops and make then buy the last gen then.

          • @Zachary: RRP never seems to change.

Some places price at a discount to move stock so they don't get stuck with it.

I doubt there will be any excess stock to be stuck with, so there won't be any discounting on the 30x series. You'll need to wait a couple more years to see if it happens with the 40x series.

  • Have you asked for cOmPeNsAtIoNz?

  • Get the refund, they don’t owe you anything more…

Use refund to buy some time on an azure VM to do your processing

  • I think you basically need to decide whether to pay $200 for "the LHR"… It depends how much, you paid initially…

    $1400 + $200 for the RTX 3080 LHR gaming revel.. seems reasonable…

You get fight them.. but legally, all they owe you is your money back…

in the past PLE, have been pretty nice, to offer.. people in their queues' first dibs at some of the newer cards. at launch day…

I laid down $1139 for a launch day EVGA 3080… on the morning of the 18/9/2021.. fully paid for.. arrived late in June 2021…

I was pretty worried.. the model, would be discontinued. and I would be screwed over.. Kudos to PLE for finally delivering…

    Looking the PLE list
    https://www.ple.com.au/RTX30-Buying-Information

there's launch day EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 from the 17/9 and MSI ventus 3080…. this are peeple who ordered within an hour of launch time at 11.00pm… who still haven't got their cards…

I fully paid for a launch day EVGA RTX3070 from scorptec, whilst, it had an ETA..a week later, 4 weeks later, I apparently the next in line.. I gave up and grabbed a different brand from another retailer..

Please don't pretend you need a rtx 3080 for your studies. its 99.9% for gaming, which is fine. Just don't go complaining i need it for studying or im only on $xxxx pw im so hard done by.

Bottom line is you bought a totally unneeded luxury item which is in short supply.

Hell im sure with A 3080 your study would take a hit as you would be gaming. So really they are helping you study and playing games less

They owe you nothing they can refund you or you can suck it up.

    • psh mate. of course, it doesn't. But the situation is not about that

  • Think you've used enough time chasing this card. I reckon get your money back, either invest in something till the next gen cards come and put your money in that. These cards are reaching a year old.

Unfortunately businesses can get away with this sort of behavior but as other people said, it's unfortunate and unlucky you were not honored your card.
