Canberra to Go into Lockdown

Lockdown from 5pm today, initially for 7 days. See https://www.covid19.act.gov.au/news-articles/seven-day-lockd… for current details.

Schools closed unless you really need to send your child in. Self-access online resources are available for students. Teachers will spend the week preparing for online learning again for if the lockdown is extended.

If you live in some postcodes around Canberra you are allowed to come in for essential reasons (eg grocery shopping if can't be done in NSW). Expect to be stopped by police if you have NSW license plates and have to supply ID to prove you live in the list of postcodes. Anyone not living in these postcodes will be fined/arrested/sent home.

There are 4 cases currently (one mystery case and 3 close contacts).

So sad. My birthday is tomorrow and I had lots of fun things planned for the weekend. Happy birthday to me 😭

Let's blame the premier of the state because someone used the same God damn toilet.

Why didn't the government think this through and provide separate toilet facilities for staff?

Not that different from allowing hotel quarantine security guards to go home and drive for uber eats…

          One stuff up after another…

This current stuff up cost us an extra two weeks in lockdown…

    • That sucks. I hope your lockdown doesn't go as long as last time! I think they learned lessons from last time about going hard and fast though so hopefully it won't be as long.

ring of steel call / cry ?

      and wasn't that a great success…

Lockdowns don't work with this delta virus. Look at Sydney, 2 months in and cases are still going up. If you want an insane stricter ongoing 4 months lockdown with cases still sky-rocketing up look at Vietnam

    • +10

Yes, lockdowns don't work, but only in Sydney…

Have you read any news in the last 2 months?

Lockdowns work, whatever the fk Gladys is doing doesn't work.

      • -1

Lockdowns work, whatever the fk Gladys is doing doesn't work.

It does shows she is running out of ideas as the infection rate is climbing and the lockdown doesn't seem to stop the spreads.

    • +4

It would work if there was a consistent lockdown across the whole state, or at least the whole of greater Sydney

      • +3

This chasing after LGAs is a very very strange strategy.

      • +1

It would work if there was a consistent lockdown across the whole state

Not really… For it to work, people just need to follow the rules…

In Sydney's case, there are lots of people who have symptoms, but are not going to get tested or isolate because it would mean they can't go to work.

    • What's the alternative?

I feel like, at least from what I've been hearing ACT is doing something different to what I've been hearing about what's been done in NSW. I think ACT is at least starting to lockdown at the first sign of COVID-19 case. First case reported and bam, 5pm that day was the start of the lockdown.

They found out that it was Delta variant today (which they suspected), but they've already announced a lockdown yesterday.

Hopefully this stops the community transmission to a minimum and hopefully it gives us enough time to vaccinate enough people so that the hospitals don't get overwhelmed.

    • yep didnt work for SA, WAS & TAS (Granted TAS is always locked down)

    • +1

Why look at Vietnam? Just look at every other state in Australia… funny how only NSW seems to be failing. Whatever Gladys is doing in Sydney is not a real lockdown.

      • funny how only NSW seems to be failing.

That says a lot about the people there, and not knowing how to follow rules…

        • +3

I have a strong doubt that "Sydney people" or "NSW people" are somehow different from other Australians.
What, for some reasons, all rule abiding Australians ended up outside of NSW? Pffft.

Why then do many refuse to use QR codes, where in SA, just about everyone does?

            • +1

@jv: Do you have numbers on your claim? Or are you just fixated at the news articles that highlight some people?
There are news articles of someone not following the COVID rules, probably in every state. I've seen people complaining about people not wearing masks in ACT, etc etc etc.

People in similiar situations, in a similiar environment, act similiarly.
We can try to distance ourselves from what we deem as "bad apples", but they are just same human beings as we are.

I think the better question is, what has the government done to stop people from not following the rules or what has the government done to allow people to follow the rules?

                • +2

@jv: So that's talking about the QR code compliance, is it? Pffft.

People in similiar situations, in a similiar environment, act similiarly.
It's the government's job to set the situations and environments that promote rule abiding behaviours, and stop people from breaking the rule.

Which one do you think is the more likely explanation? One that requires entirety of NSW being rule breaking people or one that says the government failed to do its job of encouraging people to do the right thing and discouraging people from doing the wrong thing.

And even if I were to assume that for some bizarre reasons (I dunno, NSW is the magnetic pole that attracts rule breakers or smth), that NSW people are more likely to not follow the rules than the other states, who do you think should have enforced the rules better then?

Doesn't stop all the loonies, and there is a heck of a lot of them in NSW.

                    • @jv: All from what I have already mentioned

There are news articles of someone not following the COVID rules, probably in every state. I've seen people complaining about people not wearing masks in ACT, etc etc etc.

People who don't follow instructions are everywhere.

People in similiar situations, in a similiar environment, act similiarly.
We can try to distance ourselves from what we deem as "bad apples", but they are just same human beings as we are.

The government failing its job is much simpler explanation than say, the population disposition is completely, fundamentally different between the states that it has a massive impact on COVID-19 responses.

And even if I were to assume that for some bizarre reasons (I dunno, NSW is the magnetic pole that attracts rule breakers or smth), that NSW people are more likely to not follow the rules than the other states, who do you think should have enforced the rules better then?

Even if we assume something like that is even possible, and there is that kind of difference in population, the government still has responsibilities to enforce the rules that they've imposed to protect its citizen.

                      • @iridiumstem:

People who don't follow instructions are everywhere.

Appears NSW has a higher percentage of them.

Lockdowns don't work with this delta virus.

The virus can't spread if people don't move around.

Obviously, quite a lot of people are not staying locked down as they should…

      • What I mean when lockdowns don't work, I mean covid will never go away. Even with vaccination, some vaccinated people will still get covid, non vaccinated people will still get it and people will still die, just Like influenza. So if Australia wants to be isolated from the world forever then lockdowns work. Or we just have to live with it.

        • most people already understand that they have to live with it. However we can only "live with it" once enough people are vaccinated. because ICU beds will not be enough if the government just let it rip through the population.

I personally know 2 people who died in their sleep because their SPO2 dropped all of the sudden. Both of them were being treated at home because the hospital are full.

If “2 weeks to flatten the curve” turned into 1 year+, does that mean they are locking down for at least half a year?

  • Happy Birthday! Sorry about Gladys and the gold standard.

LOL - as you (should) know, the Gold standard was pre-Delta contact-tracing. And compared with 'Dan from Mexico', it certainly was…

  • Happy belated birthday Cat. :)

Woo lockdowns. Won't go away even after everyone is vaccinated. Let's all follow the narrative like sheep. Not much sheep can do anyway. The French are fighting though.
