What Happens to Qantas Upgrades Done on Points When COVID Ruins Plans?

Hi. I have a trip booked in September that I've upgraded me and my family to business class with points on QANTAS. Just thought I'd ask the brains trust what should happen when you try to move your booking due to border closures?

I just called up 131313 waited for over an hour and the person who served me was like, no you lose the upgrade on the tickets and you don't get the points back. So I told not to change it but pretty sure there is zero chance of travel before end of October.

I'm sure someone else must have done this before without getting shafted ?

What happens to Qantas upgrades done on points when Covid ruins plans ?

    To which Qantas said…

you lose the upgrade on the tickets and you don't get the points back

    End of threat

Geez, bit harsh with the threat

      • It is Qantas we're talking about here.

  • Sounds a bit unfair that you lose the points for something outside of everyone's control.

Shouldn't the default be you get to upgrade your next flights or you just get back your points?

  • Sounds like a pretty crappy answer. We're meant to go to sydney in Nov which we'll probably cancel, fully booked on q points classic rewards when they had the 30% sale a while ago. If I cancel these flights, will get all the points and taxes back.

Generally not a good idea to "upgrade" using points anyway, especially now if that's the attitude they have with no refund on points used.

We’re in the same boat with business class seats booked for late September at the 30% off rate. I’m going to try calling up and changing the flight dates in the hope of keeping the seats at the discounted rate.

I just had my discounted points flight cancelled (as it was to nz). They said if I had changed it before it was cancelled the routing would be re-priced on the current points. However as I waited until they cancelled it they can change it for you with no additional points (as they cancelled your plans) but they told me it had to be the same routing.
        Hope this helps.

        • Thanks for this. Now I just have to summon the motivation to deal with Qantas in the phone.

    • I wouldn't guarantee that, i had flights to queensland booked with points in June (booked when they were advertising full refund for cancellation) and i only got my points back (for the flight not for carbon offset) and never got the taxes back. I called them twice and both times they said they couldnt find my booking number and just hung up on me, i have since sent an email as well with no response. No customer service anymore

      • My taxes took 12 weeks to come back, so there may still be hope.

        • thanks i had given up hope! its only been about 8 weeks since i cancelled. Still pissed they keep hanging up on me though, and the estimated wait time of less than 15 minutes that was actually over an hour was annoying

      • we also cancelled flights to europe last year booked on points, had points back same day, taxes (for one person) back within a week, and the other taxes took 3 months to come back.

  • Weird thread when you already have the answer from the company !

Recently had to move some upgraded flights with qantas - person on the phone moved both the date and the upgrades.

I would call back and hope someone else gives you a better answer. It should be a no brainer for them to move the upgrades or refund them. Everytime I have spoken to them they give you different answers about certain things so just try again.

  • Thanks all ! Will update if I manage to keep my points …

  • So turns out the person who I spoke to initially had no idea what they were talking about and the points spent on upgrade were in fact fully refunded when I called back a second time. So happy ending
