Victoria Car Club (for Discounted Registration)

Hi all,

Appreciate if someone can give some advice on car clubs, I’m looking to get a car over 25 years old to get the discounted rego from VicRoads. The other requirement was to be in a club, can anyone advise if there is a club with a cheap fee.

Cheers

    Christ, cant anyone Google anymore?

Check out the Vicroads "Club Permit Scheme" website for all the information you require.

Here is a list of all the clubs. You haven't given us much to go on (like what sort of car, what is your intended use, etc), so just pick one.

    • My main question is a club with a cheap fee. There are plenty of clubs in the list which I saw, but which one has a low fee is all I’m after.

    • Maybe a Toyota Altezza or rebadged Lexus or Classic Camry based on OP's username :)

  • apparently you can create your own club too I heard

  • Daily driver?

    Limited use conditions apply.

    • Weekly mainly in this situation

Technically you can only drive either 45 or 90 days per year and if you get pulled over without a log book entry you are knackered.

Is it a legit limted use club car or are you just trying to reduce your registration costs on a normal car?

If the car club is legit you would be expected to attend some meetings for them to sign you off but this does not always happen.

  • Wouldn’t you want to join a club that represents the vehicle you purchase? Ie It would seem a bit odd to buy a Monaro but join an Escort club because low fees.

  • I heard the Great Wall car club is cheap :)

  • Maybe think about safety first instead of thinking to save a couple hundred bucks by buying a 25 year old plus car…

    • There’s plenty of 90s vehicle out there mate, or even older ones which are still going strong.

This is the kind of thing that puts genuine club permit holders in jeopardy. People looking for cheap registration for cars that are not really intended to be club cars

Guys, I’m not here to argue about being a genuine club member. This is a requirement from vic roads, it’s fair to pay a lower rego fee if the car is being used once a week or lower than that. However the requirement is to be a club member, this is following the rules to be with a club. If it wasn’t a requirement, maybe there wouldn’t be that many members out there. Not saying the members out there aren’t genuine, but people have different purposes for being a member.

    • No.

    • I’m not here to argue about being a genuine club member.

So you are saying you are not or you are looking at becoming a genuine member?

it’s fair to pay a lower rego fee if the car is being used once a week

That depends. Do you have a genuine classic/historic car or just want to ustilise the permit scheme to avoid paying full rego?

However the requirement is to be a club member, this is following the rules to be with a club

What "classic" car do you have? Some clubs have minimum attendance rules and minimum membership time before they will hand out permits. Or do you just want the cheapest club and will buy a shitbox once you work out what vehicle club they are?

If it wasn’t a requirement, maybe there wouldn’t be that many members out there.

It is a requirement, because the scheme is built around enthusiasts who like coming together to chat about/drive/show off their favorite car/bikes/trucks. You just seem to want cheap rego?

Not saying the members out there aren’t genuine

Are you? Just seems like you want to abuse the scheme to avoid paying for full registration.

      • Depends what you would call a genuine club member, if the member attends the club events once or twice a year. Would that mean they're a genuine member… And it wouldn't be anyone to judge other than the club president/member rather than someone here. Seems like some ppl have too much time at home during lockdown to be caring about peoples membership attendance. If the member is not doing there part to be involved in the club then they would be kicked out.
And who said this was to abuse any system? If the car was used like an everyday car, then I'd agreed it abusing the system but not in this case.

If the membership was high then it kind of defeats the purpose to go for a 90 day rego, rather just pay for the full registration.

If the club was good and in line with a reasonable fee then it would work out for me.

And who said this was to abuse any system?

Looking for ‘the cheapest club’ certainly sounds like abusing the system. If you were genuine you’d be looking for the club that suits your needs. A club that has your type/brand of car, suitable meeting schedule and location, trips/events you want to join in on etc, not to mention being run by and having members you enjoy spending time with.

  • I have a car that would benefit from this scheme. (i.e I want to abuse the scheme to avoid paying for full registration) I've stumbled across this club on the internet. Finding the website is as far as I have taken it so far.

    Victorian Red Plate Club Inc.

The advantages to our club are no meetings to attend and no forced club runs, no committees and no raffle tickets to sell. There are substantial savings such as greatly reduced registration fee, no registration stamp duty and greatly reduced insurance costs. This club is perfectly positioned to deal with the self isolation expectations of the COVID 19 health management plan.

Fees $100 per year (Plus $50 one off fee) Also car must have a current RWC.

    Interesting fact From FAQ's

    Q. Can P platers drive V8 CPS vehicles?
    A. Yes. Because the CPS is considered to be a permit by VicRoads there are no power restrictions on P platers.

    Q. Is the world going to end if P platers drive V8's?
    A. No.

    • Good one!..

  • I've got no skin in this game but I've seen old utes and even an old tilt tray wearing a club rego plate all the way here in Sydney.

  • It's not worth it.

You can only drive max 90 days per year.
You need to fill out a log book every time you drive.
If you don't fill out the log book, you are driving unregistered and you're basically (profanity).
You need to take it to the club for yearly inspections, and then take the paperwork to vicroads (maybe you can mail it)>
The system in victoria is a mess, I've been turned away from 2 vicroads because they refused to acknowledge there was a second page listed with more scrutineers who signed off my bike. It's literally a god damn scanned hand written piece of paper with the approval and they didn't know how to push next page.

The whole system is a shit show, for a daily commuter anyway. You're going to spend about $200PA instead of what almost $700 and have to dick around every time you get in the car and fill out a log book for the entire year.
