Australian Post Rechargable Visa Card

Hello

I want to buy a Auspost rechargable Visa card but they require a mobile number(to SMS pin number I believe).

Now I don't have a mobile nor have I ever had one.

How can I receive SMS from Auspost with out going on a plan.
Can I buy some of them $2 sim cards?

Can I use a online service like pinger?

I have a mobile phone but its not used(and wasnt mine).
All I want to do is activate the card and thats it, I will no longer use the mobile.

Thanks for your time.

how old are you? if you are over 18 you can get a visa debit card from a financial institution.

  • I'm with Bendigo bank but I heard I need to to pay $3 a month for a debit card.

    I'm not paying $3 a month.
Should I just make a new bank account and keep the Bendigo bank account for serious things(job salary etc)

    • if you're under 18 and or a student you can get free banking inc withdraws from most banks

      • However, if you're under 18 you cannot get a visa debit from the banks.

  • Pinger might work if international SMS is catered for.

Any mobile provider with non expiring credit?

seems like no fees, which sucked on similar products.

  • You should just get a new bank account, NAB charge no monthly on their Classic Banking account that comes with a Visa Debit card.

Alternatively yes you could activate a $2 sim card and put it in your phone just to receive a number and then the SMS.

    • Is there any fees at all with NAB?

I kinda broke at the moment(trying to find employment only got a few bucks) and can't pay fees.
I haven't really got money to put in the account either, I probably put $1 in it just to open it and put money in when I need to buy something.

      • No there isn't. I got one from one of those NAB promotions when they were 'breaking up' with teh banks. I have only kept the account because there are no monthly account keeping fees, and there is no catch to that (unlike some banks where you have to put in a minimum deposit).

  • Since you are such a "tale of woe", and so poor that you can't even afford a couple of bucks a month… why not forget this silly plan and just get yourself a prepaid card? Or better - don't get one, since you haven't got any money anyway?

    • I got money its just I can't affod $3 a month.

I'm in the process of trying to find employment(finished school) but I got money from over the years.
Plus I will use it when I do find a job.

      • But if you've got money, why not just go and buy a Prepaid Visa card?

I cannot understand why you are going through all this hassle of buying phones, sims, etc when you don't NEED to.

        • Well the Auspost card is $7 to buy.

Then when you put money on it its free I believe.

For a prepaid card you need to buy it for $3 every time. Sometimes you want to buy something for $40 and you got $39 on the card.

With the Visacard I could just add a other $1 but with the prepaid card I must buy a new card and put $40 not $1

    • If you're in Melb drop by and I'll give you a couple of SIM cards if you really can't afford the $2 outlay

      • No I'm fine with the $2 sim, I was wondering what were the fees.

        Thanks the offer.

  • Sorry I haven't had a mobile before. Do I just buy a $2 sim and load money at the shop I buy the sim from(about a $1 I'd imagine) to receive the SMS?

    • I'm trying to understand you. You want to buy a $2 sim and want to bargain the price down to $1????

      • I mean when you buy a $2 sim you need to add money to it?

If I do then I'll add a $1 as Im not going to use much.

        • No, you do not need to load money onto the sim. Besides, you cannot recharge $1 lol.

        • So I pay $2 for the sim, put it in the mobile and then I can receive as much SMS's I want?

Hmm I got to get with the times.

        • Yes. As long as you have a sim, you can receive messages.

FREE sim from Lebara here to save you $2 - https://www.lebara.com.au/free-sim

        • I got a Lyca mobile sim I got a while ago from a friend.
          Hopefully it still works.

          Thanks guys for the help.

  • Telstra landlines can receive SMS's without a special phone. It will ring and the SMS get's converted into voice.

    • Not on Telstra :|

  • Borrow a friends/parents number and get it sent to that. Common sence really

    • I don't like to annoy my friends/family.

Plus I think the Visa card may send things like invoices and stuff.

  • Hey Macgyver,

Just a heads up, when you purchase the card, you also need to reload $20.

  • IMHO i prefer the woolworths prepaid mastercards

    Everyday Money

    • I'm assuming you mean the reloadable version? It is a bit of mucking around, and they seem a bit slow getting the card out to you, but it isn't condition upon having a mobile phone number.
