Goods Value Declaration and Associated GST/Customs Fee

Hi OzB,

I'm purchasing some electronic accessories from the United States and going through a freight forwarding service to get it into AU.

Just had a query regarding the goods value declaration with the form. The item has a RRP of approx. $600AUD but due to limited COVID19 and limited stock, i ended up paying approx. $1050AUD.

Now according to the abf website (https://www.abf.gov.au/buying-online/buying-online), i may need to pay taxes for goods valued at over $1000AUD.

Would i need to declare a value of $1050 (what i paid) or what the RRP of the product is? ($600).

I've called the ABF to try and get clarification there but the operator that i spoke to has just said that isn't something they can advise me on…

You need to declare the price you paid inclusive of shipping costs.

    • Correct plus in addition there's likely a 5% import duty (only on the goods, not the shipping component) in addition to GST. How you sending it? Post or courier?

    • You need to declare…

I believe it's the seller that has to declare it on the shipping form. If they happen to declare it as a "gift" or a much smaller value and it gets through to you without any issues, that'll be the end of it 😁. (Yes, there may be insurance implications if things get lost in the post, but it's really what the seller/you are comfortable with).

    • And the cost of any Insurance.
