Did we ever work out why Chemist Warehouse fragrances were so cheap compared to Myers / David Jones etc.?

    Are they grey imports?

    • +12

They don't have 100% margins like luxury department stores

    • +3

I think David Jones just marks up more

    • +22

My understanding is that these colognes & perfumes are almost at (or past) their expiry. I don't think they don't go bad or off, they just don't smell as strong.

You can check against barcodes here https://www.checkfresh.com/

      • It is no always the case … I purchased the Armani fragrance at Chemist warehouse and it was fresher and cheaper than the one I got from DJs (based on code checking) … I just returned the one from DJs :) …

      • Why was tmo793 negged? That's useful advice! Thx m8

        • It's not because it's not true that they are old.

      • I bought some of these types of colognes over the past decade through the discount online and retail stores. And just figured what i was buying does not last that long anyway, then i had a couple of bottles i had bought 20 years ago through a expensive duty free store in the UK and it stunned me that the ones i had bought 20 years ago lasted longer and smelt fresher….

        • +3

          That's because they are reformulated.

          • @Laziofogna: Really they change the formulas for the same item? I thought the whole point was that you know what to expect from that item and you can keep buying the same one if you like it?

            • @lonewolf: They do it all the time, sadly. Try Google it you'll discover a new world

      • Totally false. There is a code on the bottom telling the production date, check and verify.

      • A quick check of my last Hugo Boss purchase shows it was less than a year since production, and my YSL was only a few months old (I can't remember exact purchase dates). Honestly it's not a concern at all, the reformulations make more of a difference than the age, and in many cases the older versions are preferred.

    • +4

At least the Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb is a grey import. I emailed V&R about an issue and they said Chemist Warehouse is not an authorised reseller and the products are a grey import.
A majority of these brands list Myer and DJs as authorised resellers and not Chemist Warehouse or other online resellers.

    • Most of what they sell are grey imports. They also don't store their perfumes properly, and have a number of "almost expiring" bottles.

  • +1

Been talked on other post if I remember One main factor is the date. Scent fades off as it ages/expire, chemist warehouse more likely to sell old stocks.
    Probably other reasons

    • +6

Most scents will last for many years past the listed 'expiry' date, as long as they're stored correctly. IE away from heat, sunlight, etc. Last week I managed to find a bottle of Dior Homme from 2011 and it's perfect.

      • Mate, you hit a jackpot!

    • -3

I think the fragrance grows well with age … and Chemist warehouse not always sell old stocks … sometimes, the fragrance is fresher than the one at Myer and DJs …

      • +2

I think the fragrance grows well with age

Yeah, that's not how it works. You may be confusing perfumes with wine. Besides, improper storage could degrade perfumes really quickly, and this is almost always an issue with places like Chemist Warehouse.

sometimes, the fragrance is fresher than the one at Myer and DJs

This will never be the case.

        • Ok, this is a small sample size, but I wouldn't rule it out so easily…
My YSL La Nuit De L'Homme (2020-01) from CW, purchased early in 2020, can't remember exactly when.
My YSL Y from Myer (2019-09), purchased at least after the mid-year sales in 2020, possibly after boxing day at the end of the year. It was a gift box, which may have made a difference.

Fun fact; my Armani Code Absolu, bought direct from the Armani website during the recent(ish) friends and family sale was from 2020-02.

          • @BayushiYoda:

So you purchased two different perfumes from different sellers and one was newer. Would be interesting to know what the manufacturing date of the same item would be if purchased from those two sellers.

More importantly, it's an issue that CW stores perfumes improperly and are actually not an authorised seller of several brands (too many grey imports).

        • In some cases, a fragrance can macerate as it grows older, and can in fact become more potent/stronger as time passes. This won't happen with cheaper designer releases, but some of the more expensive fragrances like Creed's Aventus definitely do. A 5 year old bottle of Aventus can sell for almost twice its retail price on the second-hand market.

Granted, I don't know how CW stores their fragrances, but sometimes older CAN be better.

          • @ngengerous:

I have to agree this could be true for some really high-end fragrances and/or with those ones formulated with genuinely good quality aroma compounds.

That said, this is more likely due to batch variations, and almost always an older version (especially around the original release dates) will be much better before it gets reformualted or watered down. This is so the unscrupulous cosmetics company could shamelessly milk the name the original produced to the last drop. I am looking at you YSL especially with respect to Kouros which is a pathetic shadow of its original self.

Things will go south rather quickly regardless of the quality of the ingredients if the perfume itself is stored improperly though.

            • @CocaKoala: Such a shame about the reformulations hey… I've heard of a lot of fragrances which have to change ingredients because some of them get banned by the IFRA over time, but then again I'm sure some companies reformulate to save costs too unfortunately. YSL are a big culprit that's for sure… La Nuit De L'Homme is another old fave fallen to the reformulation curse, such a shame

Totally agreed. I could again attribute the downfall of Kouros to this, given that they actually used original civet perfume in the early editions. And if memory serves right, IFRA got involved and it was replaced with a synthetic equivalent, but did not really lose much of its charm. But YSL in their wisdom decided they'll just go right ahead and drive it under the ground because Kouros had made a name and they wanted every cent out of it.

La Nuit De L'Homme is another old fave fallen to the reformulation curse, such a shame

Yup, an absolute shame. I wish they had rather discontinued these classics instead of making a mockery out of them. To their credit, they did kill the original M7 (God, what a legend it was), Live Jazz (another freaking awesome scent) Jazz (they killed this glorious beast only to reuse its name on some utter garbage new-age edition), Rive Gauche (same story - the "relaunch" is total and utter garbage). At the end of the day, YSL is a typical corporate and will value $$ more than anything else.

    • There is others reasons for sure, my others perfume bought at CW still going ok even though being several years at use in bathroom cabinet.
I never seen big brands being on sale at CW though, Sauvage de DIOR is the one ive been after but never seen at affordable price

So many ! Waiting for reviews

    • +8

Just a heads up all the boss bottled line (bar the intense versions) are extremely weak. Will get maybe 1-2 hours before its undetectable.

      • thanks

      • yeah it was a massive let down last time I got one.
I had Acqua di gio as my first, and I swear that thing lasted into the morning (except it didn't mix well with the alcohol coming out of my skin)
Then I got Hugo Boss, and I put it on before I went out, and it was gone by the time I arrived, pretty sucky.

      • I've got this BOSS one in the deal, bought years ago. Great scent, agree it doesn't seem to last on the skin as long as say Hugo (green/original?). A lot of these classics are reasonable prices because they aren't the latest releases or upmarket brands. Happy with them for dailies, and no point spending more at J & Myers for the same thing (but only if you want the latest)

  • Is there a consensus of which is the favorites of the listed?

    • +5

Hugo Boss The Scent Eau de Toilette, I went in-store with my misso and tried them all and settled on that one

Might be different depending on personal preference though

      • +4

@wallybR Go and get a covid tested then

  • I've got the Hugo Boss Bottled Eau De Toilette. Review: smells very sweet and soft. Vanilla, cinnamon, apple, lemon. Pleasant if you like sweet scents.
One of my favourites for work, it's not too powerful.

Haven't tried any of the others.

The more fragrances I buy, the more I feel it's not enough, or its not what I was looking for. I get bored too soon with almost all of them. No matter the price.
Is it just me? I feel like they are scamming us, because fragrances are getting weaker day by day.

    • not always i was randomly introduced to azzaro wanted by night in one of the myer stores which was on paper strips i usually put those in my pocket take it home and smell them in drydown and also check how long they last i actually put around 10 different strips on top of my pc fan grill which faces my door everytime i walk in i was getting whiffs of these cinnamon based fruity fragrance which lasted few days on paper and i was loving it next day i went back and bought full bottle everytime i overspray this and get on a public transport or in a crowd people's face gets this weird look like wait whats that smell it smells nice in their face but i agree with you on with 1 thing tho my bottle came with travel atomizer normally this fragrance is edp version and the travel size atomizer were indeed parfum version when i ran out i decided to decant from a different fragrance into this travel atomizer and even tho i washed it througly like 4 5 times with hot water and soap the smell was still there it didnt leave the bottle then it comes to what you feel this fragrance was project monster with edp version im not sure if its still the same i dont have a bottle anymore but i cant imagine the parfum version and the projection

      • I have azzaro wanted. I don't wear it much. I liked it first time I smelled it but not anymore.
It's been the case with everything I bought.
What you do is really interesting. I can see my self doing the same.

        • im kinda at the same boat with you tho these days nothing feels strong anymore but there are still few decent ones like personally i hate the sauvage but girls love it when they smell it around you im assuming its the molecules

      • +3

I'm not good at it myself, but lack of any Capitalisation and Punctuation here is dizzying 😀

    • The only way is buying newly issued perfumes, cause after just a few years once people is hooked up they make them cheaper and weaker. Last cases are Versace Eros, Dylan Blue, Dior Sauvage and Aventus. Once beasts, today little puppies

      • You're right. Creed and reflection man been amazing and at the top of my list. Not anymore. Reformulated. Nothing like before.

  • +2

anyone got feedback about how long these last?

Have absolutely been spoiled by silver scent, armaf club de nuit intense and Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud EDP which all have 8-10hr life, even if they do smell more on the synthetic side.

    • +1

Eau De Toilette last no more than few hrs. Obviously it also depends what kind of environment you are in. And where you have sprayed it.

    • +6

Unfortunately the boss bottled line has a reputation for poor performance.
      1-2 hours maybe

      • cheers

        • +1

          I have got hugo-boss-bottled-night-eau-de-toilette-100ml-spray.
          Very Very very poor performance.

      • Which brands last the longest?

    • Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud EDP

Which Shaghaf did you try, golden or black ?
      Any recommendations ?

      • Only tried golden. It’s not for everyone. IMO oud is quite polarising.

      • The gold one smells sublime on my skin. Not for everyone though

  • -1

    Who uses perfumes thesedays?

    • Yeah, I've been so smelly but it's just been me lockdowned by myself at home so I don't even smell it.

      • +1

        Thanks for telling us.

        • No problem, just letting you know you don't always need the newest discounted perfume out there :)

  • I bought one of these for $99 from a terry white a while ago. It's pretty good, doesn't last a huge amount of time though.

  • +3

The ones from Chemist Warehouse are like water after 4-5 months.

  • How about buying palermo instead? They list all big names in their catalogue and smell stays strong for long.. is there any catch?

    • I've tried a few Palermo ones they were all crap. Pretty sure I have one sitting in the wardrobe almost fully unused. Also, the sales woman tried to misrepresent the items as the actual authentic perfumes repackaged in Palermo bottles.

  • +3

Does this make you smell like a fk boy?

    • +4

nah that's the dior sauvage xD

      • I see you are a man of culture 😢

  • No one will smell perfumes these days and until mask wearing restrictions lift off

    • I have to say, I've loved wearing fragrances during lockdown. I wear them for me, and I don't need to stress about if it's appropriate for a particular situation, I just put on what I feel like on the day.

  • +1

I bought a bottle of Joop from CW and 5 years later it's still going strong!

    • But mind you

Joop is the nuclear bomb of colognes

  • -4

They make this stuff from whale vomit

    • Do you have a link? Seems an expensive source. Maybe once upon time, surely now days they have synthetic bases. I don't think they use Beaver anal glands anymore either…

    • +2

I am pretty sure there's 0% authentic ambergris in these cheap fragrances.

    • Not anymore

    • Cheaper perfumes use Ambroxan - which is a synthetic material used to replace it instead. Nothing under a triple digit pricetag will include actual ambergris.

  • Thank for posting, just picked up 2 Hugo Boss

  • Anyone have any advise on a long lasting everyday ?

    • Of the stuff that CW sells? Azzaro Pour Homme.

    • +2

      Dylan blue
      Sauvage
      Azzaro wanted night for winter

All will last 8 hours +

      • Awesome cheers, I'll check them out.

    • +1

look for a parfum instead of toilette.

  • This is EDT, is it worth?

    • It's not bad at all for the price if you don't mind buying a fragrance from someone like Chemist Warehouse.

    • nope, i would get the parfum. this is also a very old scent from the 90's. unfortunately there isn't a date it was produced, so you could have some really old stuff. most likely why it's on sale. very watered down now in comparison to when it first came out.

      • The date is in the batch code on the bottom. You can check the code online.

  • Can recommend a newer aftershave in Tommy Hilfiger Impact Intense 👍

Original Hugo Boss has been a goer for a long time

  • I bought the EDT version of Hugo Boss Bottled Night at Chemist last year and it barely lasts for a couple of hours. I also bought Armani Profumo EDP from Chemist Warehouse and that only lasts through half of the day.

I don't know if it's CW or the fragnances in general, but the intensity and longegivity of these scents are not even close to what I saw 10 years ago, so I would definitely buy the EDP version of the scent. Some of my older and cheaper EDT easily lasted for 6-8 hours including my old Hugo Boss Original and Paco Rabanne Black Xs EDTs. These days the same products (bought recently in CW) only lasts for 2-3 hours, if I am lucky. Maybe I should stop buying scents from CW to see if the issue is with their stock?!

    • This is likely to be due to reformulations and not due to CW stock

    • Edit: Been testing those at CW. Infinite is a bit like Sauvage if I remember ok. The Scent is spicer & last longer

      • EDP as well…. Mmmm

  • I bought this last time from Myer when on special with bonus corporate garment bag for
    $130 but EDP (not EDT)
It’s veryyyyyyyyyy good, love it, very long lasting

Previously bought CK Eternity from Chemist w, geez, you cam only smell when u spray it after that, gone :(

  • I have this Boss aftershave. It smells nice, but, like all aftershaves, no one can smell it on me after a few minutes of spraying it 10 times over my neck, face, wrists and clothing.
Can anyone recommend an aftershave that actually has a smell that lasts for a few hours?

  • Theres nothing wrong with CW stock, its not older/weaker or dodgy, its just not marked up as much.

  • I have few different Hugo Boss fragrances and it's my fav brand at the moment. I haven't tried Dark Blue though and the CWs around me don't have stocks that I can try. Any feedback on it ? Thanks in advance.

Also, the amazon link shows the price as $59.95 and not $29.99 ? https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B000PS8P3Q?
