had the app and deleted the app, it is a good app but really not worth paying ~$4 a month or ~$30 a year.

No need to buy IAP, its optional. Without IAP, it's still a very good app IMHO.

      • Wait so have they just changed the payment model from upfront to subscription?

  • How does this app compare to say, Starlight?

  • How does this compare to SkySafari? That’s been my goto for a while. I really find the Tonight’s Best feature in SkySafari great for finding stuff to look at.

    • Skysafari appears to be free (with IAP) on droid but $4.99 on IOS…ahh the joys of Apple!

  • Downloaded, thanks OP!

Just trying by giving back on a small scale to amazing OzBargain community. I have benefited a lot from this OzBargain community.

  • I can’t get the app to work. I had a previous version of Sky Guide but when I upgraded to a new iPad (8th Gen), it stopped working, so thought it must have no longer been compatible and deleted it. Have just downloaded the app now, and it won’t recalibrate to the current view when I move the iPad around, nothing happens at all, the display doesn’t change. Compass is on, location/time/date is correct, camera and location services enabled etc.

Must be something I’ve missed doing, but I can’t find out what it is!

EDITED: Have found the problem, I’m using a Zagg keyboard case, and the magnets in it are stopping the compass from working, I have to remove the iPad from the keyboard and the separate cover and then the app works, which is a bit of a pain. Can’t use the app on my phone either, as it’s too old (5S).

  • iPad
    Requires iPadOS 12.0 or later.

    • It’s a universal app. Works on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

  • Last time the app was free it didn’t have in app purchases, now it went free because they’ve introduced subscription

    • When was the last time App went Free without IAP? This app is still a paid app which became free for a while. IAP are optional. Please read the details above.

I have Star Walk and installed this to compare. I prefer Star Walk as you can fast forward or backward (scrolling) by minute, hour, date, month and year. With Sky Guide you can still fast forward or backward but you cannot do that smoothly like selecting or scrolling just the date, month or year. You just keep pressing to speed up the fast forward and fast backward in order to get to the date you want.

    • +1

You can actually easily do the same in Sky Guide. If you tap the time in the top-left then tap the calendar icon on the left you have the option to select an exact date and time. I do love watching the stars wizzing around when fast forwarding though lol

      • Yes but with Star Walk, everything moves as you scroll the time while with Sky Guide it jumps or skip.

        • +2

No? I was using the app last night to check the path of the sun and it's smooth motion if you're fast forwarding/rewinding. If you jump to a specific date then yes, it cuts to that time (which is how it should be imo).

          • @Ozymandias: You can't scroll lets say by month or year and quickly see where the object will be in real time. You have to enter the date and fast forward or rewind from there and it will be sequential by days only. With Star Walk, it skips and ignores the days and months if you want to just see for June of 2020, June of 2021, June of 2022 (scrolling just the month) and so on. It will show the celestial object for June only when you just scroll the year. Time, day and month will stay the same and only year will scroll.

  • Thanks, Will try it out. Though I’m used to using my head torch and looking at my Australian Sky And Telescope magazine! I am pretty sure I found Neptune the other night. Hard with just a manual dobsonian and finder scope though.

I have tried a few apps and Night Sky send the best so far.

Let me guess it’sa really bad night when you come across Uranus with a head torch 😂😉

Got it years ago when it was free. It’s a great app

Great app, use it all the time, don't have any extra IAP. Can even set it up with Siri. For example, point your phone (even locked, no app open) towards an object and say "hey siri, what star is that?", Siri responds with the SkyGuide info!

It also reminds you when key things like super moons, meteor showers etc. The iPhone widget in good too, showing you when key solar system bodies will rise and set…

10/10 recommend to family and friends lol

  • Thanks for the post!!!
