ANZ Reward Points for FF Points and Airmiles Redemption

Any opinions and comments on which ff points to redeem 185k anz points on?

Airpoints (air nz) about $920 worth of credit
Asia Miles 61k pts
Kris Flyer 61k pts
Velocity 92k pts

Its hard to decide as I'm unable to do a test booking for all of them at the same time to compare, plus its very fluctuant on value by the time I actually would want to make a real booking in the future. Am i also understanding correctly krisflyer pts can be redeemed on any airline part of the star alliance network..hence could use krisflyer pts on virgin flights? anyone make a booking like that before? how was their redemption rate like?

Thanks

  • Asia Miles and Krisflyer are both pretty good - asia miles allows for redemptions across Oneworld (so Qantas, JAL, Malaysia Airlines, American Airlines, etc) and Krisflyer covers Star Alliance (Singapore, Thai, United, Eva, etc). Krisflyer in particular has more reward flight availability on Singapore Airlines flights than other Star Alliance frequent flyer programs, which means you have a better chance of getting the flights you're looking for. The only thing is 61K isn't a lot of points so you're somewhat limited by what you can do with them, and you run a higher risk of the points expiring before you can find a good use for them. Krisflyer and Asia Miles points are generally worth more than Velocity points.

Velocity is the most flexible in the list for aussies as its easy to accumulate points and keep the balance alive, but you're limited to redeeming for domestic flights for now. If you go down the velocity path, I suggest you wait for a transfer bonus where you can get around 30% extra.

Airpoints - don't bother unless you travel to/within NZ a lot. Other redemptions are hard to come by and poorly priced.

  • My preference is specific for me; if international borders reopen, I would send them to Krisflyer (even though they have expiration dates once they get there).

I'm a bit rusty with redemption rates given that covid stopped me/us from travelling, but 61K Krisflyer gets you a round trip within Oceania for 2 people (it used to be 25k rtn in economy, or 30k rtn in business class). I booked a few round trip flights from Australia to Papeete, French Polynesia flying Air New Zealand.

I would return to Bora Bora the second borders are open.

  • Thank you both, itx and mindset.

    • hey mate, what is your ideal goal (for using points)?

let's say, if borders are open - where do you normally travel?

then there's if borders remain closed, what would be a good way to use those points?

bcos that would be more tailored for your use. I mean, if you never go to the south pacific, then my preference makes no use for you etc.
