Flat timber finish

I am using a beech timber top for a computer table but I don’t know what finish to get. I don’t want anything gloss that I’ll stick to but have no idea what. I have a ikea table that has a almost raw timber look and would like something like that but as I can’t visit a store I have no idea how to do it and google isn’t turning anything up.

This is the table I have if anyone knows how to get same finish

Just use intergrain clear satin varnish. From bunnings.

Osmo Poly X hard wax oil. Available in matte or satin. Easy to apply, hard wearing (can be used on floors). Only downside is it's not cheap.

  • How do you "stick to" a gloss finish?

    • Well not stick to stick to.. you know like glass is grippy

Cabots CFP polyurethane - water based finish, available in sheen and gloss, it is easy to apply with a brush, or spray. I have this on my stair treads, and it has lasted circa 10 years, just love this product!.

  • As others have said probably a clear water based poly. I've used Cabot's satin cabothene and seems good enough.

Suggestion is whatever you buy, test it on the under side of the table / desk where it won't be seen. So you can see what the results will be before doing the whole thing.

  • Thanks everyone. I fell asleep before ordering last night but will order something today. Seems the water based bit is the important bit to get that natural wood feel

No, an oil based will give a more natural feel. I would suggest Osmo Polyx or Liberon Finishing Oil

Anything water based will essentially apply a ‘plastic’ layer over the top of the surface. Oils will soak into the timber a bit.

      • Well lucky I got sidetracked today. I looked at these options but can’t find any anywhere that I buy from or it’s crazy expensive where I have found it from a company I don’t know or overseas.

  • I’ve used some food grade timber oil in a chopping board. Easy to apply, doesn’t give any sheen or anything that will peel off but will require reposting after time.

Think it is citrus based, but can’t remwmber what it’s called, can have a look when I get home.

  • There is this stuff that is from bunnings so easy for me to get a hold of still not sure if its right.
