eBay Sell Fee Has Increased from 10.9% (+30c) to 13.4% (+30c)

With the new Ebay changes (after they stopped allowing Paypal payment), I am starting to think it may no longer be worthwhile selling on the platform.

I wish someone new would come along, with a fairer pricing schedule, leading to wide spread adaption.

Not only does Ebay take away the financial incentive for selling, but also eliminates bargains as the substantial markup has to be factored in.

I have limited my selling on the platform for a while now because of their practices and fees its just not worth doing anymore, better off selling via facebook marketplace or other direct media

    • This. I stopped selling on ebay years ago, their fees with a bonus kick in the nuts from PayPal (who they owned at the time) wasn't worth it.

Then again, maybe the fees are worth avoiding all the hagglers and 'is this available' enquiries.

      ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This was a long time ago,

They increased the price because of changing from paypal managed payments, to Ebay managed payments.

But yes think about selling on other platforms, eBay is full of scammers and no one is guaranteed to have faithful, honest customers. With eBay you run risk of loosing feedback very quickly if you getting hammered by scammers. It's definitely no longer a good platform, that's why so many businesses Like COLES, OFFICEWORKS etc. left eBay

    • Coles is still on eBay isn’t it???

      • I'm sure i saw a forum to say they left.

      • Its gone now.

        • No announcement ? Just phantomed??

  • after they stopped allowing Paypal payment

Huh, for seller fees you mean? Buyers can still pay via Paypal.

Sellers use to get the money instantly into their paypal account.

Now sellers have to 'wait' for ebay to do its thing etc, and then dumps the money into your bank account minus all their fees etc.

You also have to grant ebay access to your bank account so they can reach their hand and take money out when they like (same as paypal).

Oh and the total cost of 'fees' from what ebay + paypal charged under this 'new' platform has gone up.

If you can put up with the timewasters and don't mind haggling Gumtree is a fee free option.

    • Face-to-face sales and cash on pickup only highly recommended.
  • Ebay doesnt want private sellers, thats why they bought Gumtree..
    Ebay - business'
    Gumtree - the rest

Stalkerbook market place is an option - but you need to be on there…

eBay bought Gumtree so they could buy out the competition and restrict the features to push people to use eBay.

and once again the ACCC let monopolies be created.

You can throw Bunnings in with that one. I'm astounded that they're allowed to do what they do.

      • To this day trying to sign in to Gumtree : Sorry, there appears to be an issue with your account, please

I have contacted them a few times and basically hanged up in my face . I went out of my way to pay some advertising fees to promote items sold on Scumtree . My crime using an generic pic that I did not know I couldn't use there .

Real reason : They get 5 figures + in Ebay fees pa and don't want to lose any to Scumtree sales .

ebay purchased gumtree to STOP it eating away at its ebay business.

They first creat paypal, focusing seller to user PayPal, both charging fee and getting higher on both. Then sold PayPal off, create managed payment, increase in fee as they no longer need PayPal. Next steps is separate managed payment and sold it off.

This is how they make money, seller on eBay is just to keep the volume of transactions to get the ball moving for THEM.

All seller is just a condom for eBay. Use them one off and throw them away

actually, Elon Musk created Paypal, not ebay. they just bought it at some point and then got rid of it.

  • It ends up being the same, PayPal was about 3%. No longer instant, have to deal with eBay instead of PayPal for issues, which seems worse. eBay is rubbish these days.

    • -2

      Incorrect
Buyer has the choice of dealing with either or both

Ebay sides with the seller as long as proper description and disclosure is provided

PayPal sides with the buyer regardless.
Their attitude in a complaint is to refund the buyer and have them return the item to the seller, therefore providing the seller with another opportunity to sell the item. Too bad if it arrives back damaged.

      • We are talking about being a seller. PayPal can be fixed my using afca, eBay can't as far as I know.

        • -1

          PayPal cant be fixed
          Ive tried
And do you really want to go to all that trouble…OMG
          Be practical man!

          as I have clearly stated
PayPal sides with the Buyer and should be avoided by sellers if possible

          • +1

@HeWhoKnows: PayPal can be fixed, I've gone against them a number of times, and got my money every time. I'd much rather deal with someone who has to deal with afca, than someone who is unregulated.

            as I have clearly stated
PayPal sides with the Buyer and should be avoided by sellers if possible

So does eBay. The difference is, one has to deal with an ombudsman who can fight for you, the other doesn't.

  • Only use gumtree now and it’s cash or cash.

Sometimes you can get lucky and have “pay no fee” offers. I had one recently which lasted for around 2 weeks which was pretty decent.

    • Free shipping too, saves you a further $10.

  • I think its slightly cheaper than before, it used to be 10.9% + paypal (2.9% + 30c).

  • Price of convenience. You can get more money out of Gumtree or FB but you'll have to deal with the plethora of tyrekickers and constantly reposting your ad.

  • As a seller you should avoid PayPal
As the seller you pay the fee when the buyer uses Paypal to pay but they always side with the Buyer.

Its not a good arrangement for sellers
    Read about seller protection
The only protection you have as a seller is by providing tracking number to prove item was delivered/received by the buyer.
    Thats about it

That's why you take a crapload of photos of the device, how you packed the item and everything before you sell. I always do this.

  • Total bummer about PayPal becoming so shit and the rest of the platforms full of scammers. I live in a remote area and pickup/cash sales are difficult as the population isn't here. It was great when eBay was good. Gumtree still ok, but I've been scammed on all platforms lately. Still waiting on a phone bought a month ago on FB marketplace interstate where the seller has reasonable excuses but still… a month has passed.

I think the biggest issue is the abuse these organisations face with scams and that causes them great expenses which they need to recoup somehow.

Best we go back to selling and buying locally…. And that disadvantages rural people. That's just the price of living rural.

  • They have turned into a rip-off
