Fill in around Pre-Moulded Ponds?

We have a large frog pond that is rectangular and made from a plastic liner in a brick frame.

The liner needs replacement, but we want to go with pre-moulded plastic ponds do reduce future maintenance due to leaks.

The pre-moulded ponds will be somewhat smaller than the total existing pond space, so the space around the new ponds will need to be filled in.

What is the best material to use to fill in the space? Would the "free clean fill" advertised on gumtree etc. be ok to fill the majority, with then some garden soil on top for planting?

I think the total space I'll need to fill will be about 3 cubic metres.

Thanks!

On a much smaller pond I used dry sand. Worked perfectly. Pours in easily and settles well. It was a many years ago, but I think I let it settle and topped up a couple of times.

    • Cool thanks yep that is probably the most sensible thing to use, especially as a base layer. Is there a "cheap" source of sand?

I just got mine from our local landscape supplier. Picked it up in a ute but it was less than 1 cubic metre which is all it would hold anyway.

3m, probably best get it delivered.
