Is It The Mattress or The Slats? (Side/Rib Pain)

Good evening fellow users,

We bought a sleeping duck mattress a couple of months ago to go along with a bed frame from Bed n Sheds.

We have been waking up with sore sides/ribs/below the ribs. It will cause us to toss and turn and struggle with sleep, but it does not happen on a nightly basis. It happens often but not every night. We have changed inserts through Sleeping Duck and went from Medium to Firm and now to Soft.

It does feel better but it is also still there. I have researched online and some have said it could be the slats?
They are your standard wooden slats. (Possible fix: buy some more slats and fill the gaps?)

Can anyone give me some insight as to what it could possibly be? or has anyone experienced this?

We are still within our 100 nights but are wondering what other mattresses we could possibly try?

and no…I do not have any kidney issues!!! (AND YES MY USERNAME CHECKS OUT!!!)

Maybe put the mattress on the floor for a night and see if a solid base will change outcome?

    • We thought about that, only issue was last time we had the mattress on the ground my partner ended up with a bad bout of Vertigo!

On further investigation: We realised the gap between slats are 7cm which looks like it might not be supporting the mattress as much as it should.
Although most bed frames I have seen have that same gap.

  • Could be either, you'll need to test your mattress on the floor (to see if it's the mattress) or get another mattress on those slats to see if it's the slats!!

Where is sleeping duck mattresses manufactured?

    • I believe it is China.

  • I personally went to Bunnings and got them to cut a few more pieces of wood to make the gaps smaller 😁

    • Did you notice a difference afterwards?

      • Definitely more wood equals more support

  • FWIW we also have a SD mattress but also bought their slat-base with it and have had none of the issues you mention. But yeah try some more slats and see how you go.

  • had similar issues. bought a ply board from bunnings and put it over the slats.
    absolutely no issues.

but it depends on your body requirements mate.

good luck to you and your mrs mate.

        • One more question Ash SA,
using this website: https://www.plyboard.com.au/ can you point me to what plyboard?

Its a local for me so it might help rather than googling! Cheers

@iNeed2Pee: any F11 would work if the bed slats are standard Australian ones. A thickness from 15mm is available at that store so should be fine mate.

More the merrier (25mm is the BEST but will be costly) as it will be putting extra abstraction for your back and you will forget the bed has any slats there :)

Any cheapie viet/chinese versions of slats might be bit filmsy - in that case i would add a non-slippery mat there.

            • @Ash SA: Thanks mate!
Mattress hurt us on the floor as well, so it may be the mattress.

I will still look into buying some plywood with those links you have replied with!

              • @iNeed2Pee: Sorry to break it to you then mate. if floor hurts you, plywood will make it worse. pls DO NOT buy the plywood in this case.

My condition was different and needed to straighten up my spine bit more and now I am feeling more energetic throughout the day with that setting.

Please invest in quality mattresses as that is one area you must not cut the corners (not saying you are). May be try gel infused ones with 30 day trial if possible.

This one is also pretty good : https://koala.com/en-au/beds-mattresses/mattresses/soul-mate… with 120 nights trial.

                • @Ash SA: Yeah our notion was going to be to try a couple more and see how they go, SD was our real first mattress together and if its struggling 2 months in with both of us complaining about the same issue than its fairly obvious.

We tried to give the SD another chance but it aint working. We will go into stores once lockdown ends, but for now will try some others. I heard Koala is good too, but Sleeprepublic sounded ok as well. Many on the market with the trial and error so we will utilise those options for now!
