Grinding Noise from Car

So a few weeks ago I heard my car make this weird grinding noise, best way to describe it is the sound that a train makes when it screeches to a halt, it would only come on ever so often. lately, though it seems to be quite frequent, at first I thought might be brake pads however it got new pads no long ago and happens even when I'm not applying the brakes, sounds like it is only being produced by the front driver side wheel. any ideas?

    Wheel bearing?

  • dished rotors?

  • Gravel caught in the brake rotor.

    Do the following:-

    • Handbrake on, put into neutral, jack up front right side, so wheel is off the ground.
    • Grab top and bottom of wheel, and pull back and forth (same left and right). Any play at all then your wheel bearing (hub) is failing, and needs replacing. If ok then,
    • Spin the wheel slowly, if any 'catching' at all then you have a problem with the rotor or caliper. Check for any debris (gravel) stuck in the caliper/rotor. If ok then,
    • Spin the wheel as fast as you can, listening for any groaning, grinding. If any noise then the wheel bearing is failing

Could be ghosts, I recommend an exorcism.

    • know any priests who perform?

  • Car age and model might help?
Worn or loose drive belt? Lift the bonnet and get someone to rev the motor up and down. If it is a side mounted engine the noise will be coming from the area you describe.
    Could be many things…

Not knowing what make and model car makes it difficult.

CV joint or wheel bearing would be my guess

So you're the person who bought it. ;) You have my sympathy.

Maybe that's why your car smells

I'd guess wheel bearing too, but have a visual inspection for any sticks or gravel caught somewhere it shouldn't be. I had a mystery noise once upon a time that turned out to be a fairly large stick wedged somewhere (not up my butt) that made an extremely intermittent and worrying noise.

I'm glad it wasn't up your butt 🤣

      ill have a look

  • How is proton car, not hearing about this cheap car from Malaysia on this ozbargain.

as you are the user i thought i should check up with you. 2 years back i was offered Proton Gen 2 for 6 K with 2 years warranty still on it, but my wife was not so keen to get proton and she insisted i should accept Honda civic 10 years old car.

How is drive and pickup and service reliability.

    • The Proton is really good, i got my second hand for 2.5k, 115,000km. Is really good only small minor issues here and there, otherwise good!

  • Sounds like a wheel bearing. This was a problem for Suzuki's swifts too apparently because of the way the car was strapped down on the freighter ship.
