    That's probably the low range, but yes, $35/kg seems a little excessive - more like boutique prices.
    
    Plenty of hobbyist producers around happy to sell around the price you've mentioned. If you're lucky you may find somebody selling as low as $10/kg, though they are being very generous if that's the case. Buying it locally like that probably means you're less likely to get rice syrup in it anyway.
