New Samsung S Series Phone

Bought a S10 2+ years ago (now out of warranty) and has a USB Moisture Sensor Error and slight crack in screen.

Been quoted $650 to fix and no phone for 2 weeks while I wait.

Decided better to buy new phone with warranty. Missed last Samsung Education Store deals.

Any know of any others? Happy with S10, S20, S21 etc.

Cheers

My note 9 did that the other day. Clean your port with a cotton bud. I had dirt in there and it went away. Use compressed air and it will go away.

    • Have tried all that with no luck.

If you can't get it working great yourself, just grab another refurbished S10 or S20 - no point in buying a new phone anymore IMO.

For that $650 quoted, you can buy a decent condition Galaxy S20 5G off someone or refurbished on eBay. For about $400 you can buy a great condition S10 knowing Android 12 should make it to your device. Other Android brands will be cheaper for the same year, like Google Pixel or Oppo, whilst Apple will be more (but you'll get longer software support). I usually recommend used Pixels as they are very cheap, do everything, and the Pixel 3 is getting Android 12 if that's important to you. Oh, and they run very smoothly and can be modified to run other operating systems later.

Alternitively you can always wait for a JB Hi-Fi Telstra deal and put $300 to $800 on monthly payments for a $1000 Galaxy S21, not a bad option either actually.

    • Thanks for your reply :) Considered second hand or refurbished but keen to get a new 2 year warranty. Also prefer new so I don't inherit a phone with any hidden / potential issues. Have had some dramas in the past buying second hand electrical goods.

      • Fair enough - so JB Hi-Fi just updated their mobile offers:

$99/month for 24 months with $1000 gift card - so $41.67 per month for the credit, and $57.33 per month for the service. You might be able to get a further $10 off per month from Telstra.

Alternatively, wait for the $69 per month for 12 months to include a $500 gift card - the it's $41.67 per month for the credit, and just $27.33 per month for the service for 12 month contract. Again, you might be able to get a further $10 per month off, too.

Unless you actually need 150GB of data every month, the smaller plan is 60-80GB of 5G enabled data and at under $30 is the best value option - so long as you get $500 gift card. If you need a phone now however, for the $30 per month you can get 30GB on Optus Flex or 20GB on Boost without 5G access.

As for the phone itself, I really recommend heading in store if possible, again at JB (their range in person is the best - I don't work there I swear) to get a feel for the size and UX of these devices. Most are around 75mm wide and it does my head in. Most do not need a flagship device like the S21, and even in that price range there are other options that you may be drawn too from Motorola, Asus, Oppo and others. When browsing in store I frequently hear sales pitches going on as to why a top-tier phone is better - it's not, unless you game or actually use that performance boost, you'll be find with something that performs the same as your current S10, but new of course.

I got one of my parents an Oppo Find X2 Lite as an upgrade from their Galaxy S9, and they love it. Only cost $499 brand new, I got it like new at CeX for $350 and got a brand new phone anyway with 2 year warranty from both the store and OEM. Fantastic device.

Let me know if I can provide any more help picking the right device for you.

  • Where did you get the quote from?

    • A mobile phone repair store. Also got another one from authorised Samsung Repairer of approx. $500 for screen and usb charger port replacement which would also mean no phone for a while.

Not sure what state you're in, but if you take it to a Samsung Store or kiosk, as long as you pay to get the screen repaired ($395 for S10 front) they can cover the USB port under warranty, most of the time.
Yes it may be more than two years old, but generally Samsung will cover your phone for 3 years under warranty in order to avoid ACL issues.

I used to work at one of the Samsung Stores.

Also never take it to the 3rd party repairer, your phone will come out worse than when you gave it to them.

  • Why don't you just get a wireless charger and keep going ?? Or try a new cable to also rule it out..

I am using a wireless charger but it's a pain as doesn't charge as fast and I can't connect phone to Android Auto in car without cable. My Android Auto does not support wireless connectivity too.

      I have tried multiple cables.

  • Plenty of new ones out there for the $650 or even less.
