Domain Names - Cheapest Registrars

Anyone know of a reliable comparison to find cheapest .com.au and .com domain name registrations & renewals?

Its always an effort, sorting through the BS, working out if GST is included etc, to get the actual price.

  • Anyone know of a reliable comparison to find cheapest .com.au and .com domain name registrations & renewals?

How much are you looking to save?

  • This seems to be what I was looking for:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/cheap_au_domain_names

And to answer your question in the true Ozbargain way, as much as I can.

  • Pretty sure cloudflare is cheapest(~8 usd for .com etc) but doesn't offer .au but google does .au for around 12usd which probably the cheapest ongoing from memory. All provide WHOIS privacy for free .

    • Yeah I use a .com Cloudflare, it is the cheapest but you can't register a domain directly with them, you've got to register it elsewhere and transfer it in.

      • Yeah that is true, I usually use namecheap/google domain.

  • The cheapest domains are crypto domains. Pay a one-time fee of $20 US for .zil and $40 .crypto.

  • Just remember if you use Cloudflare as your registrar, then you must use Cloudflare's DNS servers. If this isn't an issue, then they are always the cheapest as the charge the wholesale price. How they do it, I don't know. There is always a cost of using credit card as a payment method, so it costs them money.

I have one domain name with Google Domains (AU$18 for a .net), and one with Ventra IP (premium domain).

  • When transferring domains to another registrar, will they know what the current domain renewal dates are?
i.e. if I've paid Ventra IP until 2023 and transfer to Google Domains, will Google Domains know the expiry date is 2023 and not ask for renewal prior to 2023?

    • General domains like .com or .net will transfer the expiry date. Not sure about .com.au though

Although as part of the transfer it's asked for you to extend the registration for one extra year? I don't remember this part to be honest 🤣

      • For .com and .net (and most TLDs) you need to pay for a year, and it'll be added to the existing expiry date. .nz domains are the only ones I have experience with that don't require a renewal when you transfer.

  • For .au - VentraIP
Anything else - NameSilo or PorkBun
