Please Help Me Decide: Merida Speeder 200 or Merida Speeder 100

Hi all,

Trying to buy a new bike online but confused between Merida Speeder 200 & 100.

I understand Merida 200 is a higher spec bike but I'm having difficulty accepting the Gold Red color. Only because of the color I'm thinking of going with Merida Speeder 100 Grey.

What would you do if in my situation? Compromise on color or specs? I'll be mainly riding with kids on roads/footpaths and tracks in Melbourne…

Thank you for your advice.

It’s a well known fact that red goes faster anyway. Go for the red.

Why would color even be a factor, the color is entirely cosmetic so there is no compromise at all. get the best specs available.

    • IMO If you buy a bike, especially a first bike, you should buy one that fits well and feels good first, but that you like the look of second. It’s important to want to ride it.

Merida AU website shows the 200 as grey

    EDIT:
    and also red

seems like red was a 2020 redesign?

    • Not sure, but the stock is limited and only the Red color is available. Grey is available in Speeder 100.

Red looks better anyway. Grey is so bland/boring looking.

    • Thanks brother 🙂 I wanted a black bike but no options these days

There’s not a lot of difference between them price wise. The only thing that’d stop me getting the 100 would be if it didn’t have hydraulic brakes and the 200 did.

If it comes down to it I tend to recommend makes sure fit and feel is right first, then if you can’t decide pick your favourite colour. You have to want to ride it.

    • Both have hydraulic disk brakes. Unfortunately, no option to ride the bikes due to lockdown otherwise would never have bought a bike online… and doesn't look like we'll be out of lockdown anytime soon.

        Seriously who give a `^ about a colour ?
Unbelievable crap on here sometimes .

There’s liking a colour, hating a colour and a range in between. Ask a dozen people what their favourite colour is and you’ll likely get a dozen responses. We’re all different, some of us (quite a lot) are colourblind and we all interpret colours differently.

Yes, colour ultimately isn’t important, but why buy something that is a colour you don’t like when there is an alternative you prefer.

I have the 100 but in blue (2021) version. I considered both and I didn't think it was worth it going to the 200 specs wise. I am very satisfied with the 100, except for the colour (I care about colour like you but I went for value)

    • Thanks for your comment. How do you find the bike overall comfort-wise? It's a bit tricky to buy a bike online without trying first, but unfortunately no other choice these days.

I was looking at Trek FX 3 as well but there's no stock until June next year.

      • The stock seat is very hard and will take time to get used to it. Besides that everything else seems pretty good once the seat height is adjusted.

All I recommend is getting a rear mudguard if you will use it a lot.

        • Did you put a foldable stand on it too?

@AliKay: I mainly ride from home to work so I don't really need one. For most cases, I don't think you would need one, especially if you live in a bike friendly area (I'm in Brunswick area).
But watch out what attachments you buy for it because the bike salesman told me that only specific sizes fit for the Merida speeder.

@AliKay: I generally remove the stand from my bikes, most never had one. Hardly use them as they often lead to bike falling over anyway unless it’s perfectly flat ground.

Just lean the bike against a wall/tree/post resting it on the saddle, tyre or handlebar ends. If nothing to lean it on, lay it over chain side up, just don’t drop it.

Discovered I hadn’t removed the stand on a bike on Saturday. Next time it gets any servicing, the stand is gone.

            • @Euphemistic: @Euphemistic thanks for the advice… I'll get the bike without the kickstand and see how I go… I was thinking it might be easier to park in the garage with the stand. It is my first bike since I was a kid and now will be riding with my own kids :)

Is it worth getting the mudguards or bikes are fine without them when only riding on roads and tracks?

              • +1

@AliKay: Only need mudguard if you ride in run or mud.

Kickstand is probably ok in a garage setting, but still aren’t overly stable. You might be better off getting a wall hook or some other stand.
