Laptop/Chromebook Suggestion for 8 Year Old - Budget $400

Hi guys,

So our 2nd laptop died on weekend and we need to get another pretty quickly to support my 8 year old one with his home schooling. A basic laptop or chrome book will do as he only need it for join his zoom call sessions and some online education websites but we need something that is easy of my pocket (if possible under $400) and has a decent camera.

Appreciate any suggestion

  • Chromebook - ASUS flip or Lenovo

    • do Chromebook have all these 'permission features' for under 13yo like android? It makes things unusable as half the edu account stuff won't work.

There have been some stunning deals on Chromebooks posted lately on OzBargain.. Maybe some more around the corner.

Our kids (same age) have a Lenovo Duet and its a great all rounder that has been down around $300.
It's a nicely built convertible tablet/laptop and a good size for kids.

    • How is the camera quality ?

You can always get a separate webcam so it shouldn't be too important

It's fine. I've used it. It'll be fine for school and calling your parents.

If you think 11.6 inches screen is good enough, you can consider Lenovo Flex 3 Chromebook on Amazon. It is currently selling for $298. (It has IPS Panel, but only in HD resolution)

  • Thanks guys.

Bending towards Flex 3 or 3i

Anyone thinks if 1 is better than other ?

Would have taken Duet if that one had been on special that we saw earlier

    • Imo the duet is just too small ; granted my kid is a lot younger (grade K) they do reading off power point and off videos when they do the Google Meetings, on the Duet you would be forever zooming in and out to try and see content as it would be a lot smaller.

In terms of those links the Flex 3i is better - 64GB storage vs 32GB and a Full HD (1920 x 1080 though the ad says different resolution?) screen vs a HD (1366 x 768) screen.
      Same CPU but I guess

Flex 3i you can fold it over and use as tablet, looks more of a premium finish.

  • Don't know about these models, but kid will use the folding design with touchscreen when they are playing Roblox!
