Budget Interstate Moving (Melbourne to Perth)

Hi
I am trying to think of the best budget way to move some furniture and bags..etc interstate. From Melbourne to Perth.
Companies are quite expensive. (cheapest I found was 2k)
I thought of furniture trailer but rental for a week is over $900. On top of that would need accommodation for 4 nights…
I don't have friends who own trucks..etc
Ideas would be appreciated.

What's the furniture worth? Could be cheaper to just cram whatever you can in your car and buy the rest when you get there.

Also, you could buy a small trailer and then sell it in Perth once you have no use for it.

    • Yep, I was thinking of the trailer idea really. Thanks bro

  • Probably worth getting a quote for rail transport, just to find out.
Otherwise, sell anything that isn't high-value or of personal value, and then see how much you have. You might find a company taking a part-load or part-container.

Depending on how flexible your schedule is, look for a removalist that offers backload space and has regular Perth/Melb runs. Often 30-50% cheaper than stand alone quotes.

    Examples

    • Thank you heaps!

  • On top of that would need accommodation for 4 nights…

You mean 14 nights if planning on going via SA. Furniture removalists now listed here as traveling hotspots.

Expensive? To go the whole way across country and insured? And loaded onto truck by them?
    Fawkin bargain I'd say.

    • Unlikely insured for 2k.

Yeah um you can't even go interstate sorry you're not an essential worker and even then you need to isolate once you enter SA

    • I was wondering that as well. I saw this movie once where the guy got hold of a motorbike and jumped it over the barbed-wire fence if that's any help?

  • sell what you can, leave the rest with family, buy new when you get there …
    2k is too cheap
    3,500kms, lets say 10L / 100km so 350L of diesel (at 1.50 / liter) is $525 (each way) = $1,050
2 people to load and unload (so we'll assume they're on the truck and 3 hours each end) 38hours x 2 each way …
So two people, willing to earn $13.20 per hour, alternating driving and going non-stop …

A friend had a car sent a few years ago, paid for train transport, filled the car with whatever they could and paid the car transport price
