Installing Downlights in Home

Hi Everybody

I’m in Sydney and wanted to get a rough idea on how much cost to install per downlight by certified sparky ( with and without downlights) if anybody has got them done recently.

I really prefer to have every downlight in the ceiling to have a 240v plug where the actual light fitting plugs into, so easy to change

Edit - Have been quoted $150+GST with lights and $130+GST without lights + 120+GST / Dimmer

Thanks

  • you need to get quotes from some sparkys…

    • Have been quoted $150+ GST including lights and $130 + GST excluding lights - wasn’t very sure as never got this done before

      • Sorry is that per light?

        • @timthetoolman Yes that is per spotlight - what do you think ?

          • @Maxdax: Downlight? That's utterly criminal

          • @Maxdax: That implies 1 hour per light. That's nuts unless it's a difficult installation.

            • @brad1-8tsi: Sorry downlight not spotlight - I asked if he could do a better rate and he said this is the going rate - I feel very cheated however I’m happy I didn’t commit to him. It’s a very straightforward installation as after this post I got another sparky to come in and he quoted $50/downlight

  • Going to need a little more information..

Just did mine for $45 a light x 18, light supplied, installed and plugged like you desire. However I am in a country town, so inflate price if in Sydney etc.

    • How long did it take?

      • Half a day or so

    • That's pretty cheap. I've been quoted $65 in Sydney.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't this subsidized by givemrnt? This should only cost you $33 per entire job?

    • That's just to replace bulbs from halogen to led. Not for new led install.

    • It's to replace existing installation

  • I had mine replaced by an electrician $35 per light including the light in Brisbane. The electrician might have given me some discount as it was part of full day project tho. So, around $35~$45 seems about right?

    • Sorry mine is a new install - I think I’m being ripped off - did your job required any patch work at all in the ceiling ?

      • +1

No, we had halogen downlights throughout the house. We replaced about 19 lights. The electrician drilled bigger holes, installed sockets and plugged in the lights. The electrician used existing wires, so no wiring required. No patch work required.

  • Great Post for a noob like me. I was looking for someone to do this in regional Vic.
