Do You Donate Blood?

Did my 15th donation the other day and Thought I’d ask if anyone else in the OzB community give blood and if so, how many donations do far?

Mod Note: Visit Australian Red Cross Lifeblood for more information.

Hi All,

Truly inspired by how many OzBargainers give, or are willing to give blood.

I have created a lifeblood team for those who are interested. Always wanted to be part of a team but could never convince the office the participate (for various reasons).

If you login to your lifeblood account, simply search for the team called 'OzBargain'. Really hoping we can rally the troops on this and see how many donations we can achieve together!

  • I use to donate but then in regional Victoria they made it so you had to book instead. I haven't donated since because I never known my work schedule more than a few days in advance. Do othe area require you to book?

    • I’m regional and have to book. I always thought that was the norm?

      • On the first time I donated in Australia (2008), I rocked up to the mobile truck and they took me on the spot. Since then, I've booked online through their web site or Android app. A lot depends on how busy the site is, and if they have slots available for walk ups.

  • I donated on 22/12/21. Mobile van. They had 25 bookings and 14 showed up. I think 50% no shows/cancellations is the norm at present with COVID.

It's an easy thing to do, and having seen first hand family members need donations when unwell in hospital, its the least I can do to pay it back and forward for others that need it.

Plus, they love O negatives giving whole blood, so always easy to get an appointment time that suits as they seem to always find an open slot.

  • Did that years ago but they had the stupid policy of not using only plasma and discard all the cells if you've travelled overseas to south East Asia within previous 2 years so that kind of turn me off for wasting my blood. Hasn't been back for a while but they probably can use my cells now due to pandemic.

Just checked the Lifeblood site and the OzBargain team has donated 33 times so far this year.

    • Yep. We’re doing ok! Have you joined? Gave last week actually

      • Yes, I donated on Tuesday but don't know if it shows up on the site yet.

        • Prob not until the text message arrives i'd say.

    • the what team?

  • I would like to but I could have mad cow disease…

Sorry team I haven't been that good :( I'll try harder. I let a whole year pass. Monday for sure.

    • I did it. They still nailed it with zero pain - but I'm getting more anxious each donation. Damn my brain.

You're right. Just got text that it's on its way to Lake Macquarie Hospital, and group donations are now 34 for this year.

  • Medically, as an ex-cancer patient, I'm not allowed to. Otherwise, I would.

Don't you have to be cancer free for five years and then you can donate?

      • Just took a look. It's because I had a cancer similar leukaemia (myelodysplasia)

"However, if you have a history of leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, which involve the blood production system, you can't donate blood. It’s to protect your health and the health of patients who receive donated blood."

Bad luck, but never mind. You sound as if you might have recovered pretty well. Is that right?
I had a different cancer and just had to be all clear for five years.

          • @suzley: Yeah mostly. Had some post non-transplant complications which I still have but otherwise all good.

I take it you are too?

            • @Chmmr: Yes, in the clear. Keep up the good work!

  • Did once, tried two other times and they wouldn't let me as my BP was high. I get panicked when I visit a doc or give a blood sample so my BP goes up :(

    Been a while since I updated…!

  • I used to donate regularly, but chronic fatigue syndrome has ruled me out completely, which is disappointing.

  • I just donated tonight, still trying to beat my best time of just over 6 minutes, tonight was 6.35 which was okay, I beat a lot of people that entered before me.
