Thunderbolt 3 Powered Dock That's Not DisplayLink?

TL;DR My current displaylink dock suffers from lag on 4k monitor when doing video calls. Can you help me find a suitable TB3 dock that isn't displaylink?

Home set-up:
HP Elitebook 1030g2 w/ Thunderbolt 3 (work)
HP Spectre x360 w/ Thunderbolt 4 (personal)
32" UHD monitor, 24" 1920x1200 monitor and built-in FHD laptop monitor. All 60hz.
Targus Dock190

The Targus Dock190 is a displaylink dock. The 4k monitor is unacceptably slow and choppy when doing full screen updates like web browsing and video calls. The CPU also spikes when updating the screen like moving a window around.

Docks like this (https://www.wavlink.com/en_us/product/WL-UTD21_UTD21H.html) look perfect but have confusing compatibility specs. (Ensure computer has dual DP streams?)

Thanks for your help.

  • Docks are just the worst, what works with one machine may not work with another. We run the HP G2 and G5 docks at work and actually find that the displaylink docks are more "stable" then the thunderbolt ones.

Windows updates seem to sometimes just cause thunderbolt to crap and the docks refuse to work. Yet an identical dock still will…

I had some success using a Razer Core X with an r9 fury in it as my "dock." It powered my 34" ultrawide and 27inch QHD and managed to keep either my Lenovo x1e or works HP Zbook 15 charged (also when desperate it can charge your phone :P) however you would still get instances where you plug it in and it would refuse to be detected.

Anyway I wish you luck… I just use direct connections now with a KVM USB hub to swap my keyboard and mouse between my desktop and laptops.

  • I was in the same situation as you looking for a dock that would work on my Lenovo 920 and surface pro. Even was using a Targus dock back then. Decided to take a punt on the Wavlink dock you linked to and never looked back. Works consistently and wasn't too pricey either when I got it. The only drawback is it only does 60W PD.Otherwise pretty much the perfect dock.

  • +1

    I use a Dell WD19TB, no issues on 2 x 2K monitors + Laptop screen.

    • Yep I have one of these. I have a 4k and a 1080p connected no problem.
