Please Recommend a Super Comfortable Seat Cushion

My job often involves sitting in my stationary car for up to 8 hours.
I am looking for recommendations on a super comfortable seat cushion so I don't get such a sore bum 😕
Alternatively, would a good quality lambswool seat cover be a better option?

  • I don't have any help for you in regards to cushions (unless you want a scatter cushion, in which case I would happily donate 50 of them), but curious if you are a mobile speed camera operator?

    • mobile speed camera operator?

      Doesn’t appear to be?

      Maybe a P.I.

Buy a Lexus. Their seats are comfy.

    • I have a Toyota, a poor man's Lexus.

Disclaimer most my experience comes from working with wheelchair users, but I have some experience with car cushions. This is general advice, not health advice based on not knowing you and your circumstances…

You could start with something like either of these from Kmart which are cheap and accessible
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/2-pack-memory-foam-cushions…
    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/memory-foam-support-cushion…
They may be a little thin though and you might find you ‘bottom out’ ie if they are a bit soft the foam will simply compress and not really do anything for you. Memory foam also tends to get hot.

Next step up would be a foam cushion. Kmart has a few https://www.kmart.com.au/product/foam-seat-cushion---grey/36… Dunlop does a car wedge that sits at the back of the seat https://ilcaustralia.org.au/products/14386 otherwise there’s a bunch of foam wheelchair cushions that typically have a dense foam at the bottom and a comfort layer on top, something along the lines of this https://www.askned.com.au/scooters-wheelchairs-and-wheeled-m… your local foam shop will often sell some kind of basic ‘chair pad’ or wheelchair cushion. Unfortunately on a car seat you can’t go too thick or you’ll be too high so I’d recommend asking if you can try it on you seat before buying. You’ll need to replace a foam cushion every year or so if you’re sitting on it a lot, you can buy or sew a cover if it doesn’t come with one.

there are gel pads like this https://ilcaustralia.org.au/products/2071 personally I’m not a fan as I find they get hot. But some people think they are great. There’s also a Kmart gel one that could be worth a go https://www.kmart.com.au/product/memory-foam-gel-cooling-sea…

Equagel cushions are all the rage at the moment and could work okay in a car but are pretty expensive https://www.patienthandling.com.au/product/equagel-general-c…

there are honeycomb type cushions like this http://www.mcleanhealthcare.com.au/shop/pressure-care/balanc… (I haven’t used this brand - but I like the look of it) or this https://www.supracor.com/products/show/9 (I sat on one for a month to trial it for a supplier and quite liked it)

Roho is the bee knees of cushions but possibly overkill for you needs. They are a pressure redistribution cushion and provide comfort by redistributing pressure more evenly, but be aware they provide limited postural support. they have the LTV that offers less pressure redistribution but is cheaper and low profile and often used in a car https://www.aidacare.com.au/products/cushions-positioning/pr… or a low profile roho can sometimes be appropriate in a car https://permobil.com.au/product/roholow-profilesingle-compar… people tend to over inflate rohos and then find them unstable and uncomfortable, the idea is to sit on it and let air out until there is just one finger thickness of air between you and the seat and then they are super comfy (IMO). Rohos are expensive! So if you wanted to try one look on market place or gumtree which would be fine so long as you’re not using it for preventing pressure injuries. They are washable in soapy water but if the cushion is old or had heavy use steer clear. You can often find ones that have had limited use. There’s also a bunch of other similar cushions around, Askle is another brand. There’s some dodgy knock off brands too, but can’t verify the quality of these.

IMO sheepskins aren’t great. The wool tends to compress pretty quickly and the leather moulds over time rather than stretches. They are good for not being hot or cold and I guess thousands of taxi drivers can’t be wrong.

With anything you put on top of your car seat, it needs to be secure so it doesn’t slide around, so you may need straps on the cover of whatever you use to secure it. Also you need whatever you put on your seat not to interfere with access to pedals/controls, so avoid anything thick or bulky. For anything other than the Kmart cushions I’d probably see if you can at least place it on your seat and see if it’s going to fit appropriately before you buy it. Legally I don’t think you’re meant to add anything to a car seat, but lots of people do.

Think about what any cushion does to your overall posture too, as you don’t want to end up with a sore back as a result of introducing a cushion. Consider the fabric of your pants, if they have no stretch like non stretch jeans or business trousers that can give you a sore bum. Go for something with a bit of stretch or give. Also look into lumbar cushions - but that’s an essay for another day.

    • Thanks so much Morse for your comprehensive reply.
I'm sure I'll find something suitable amongst your recommendations. 👍😊
