Bluetooth Adapter for PC Gaming

Looking for recommendations for a bluetooth adapter that I can use to connect a controller (8bitdo Pro 2) to my PC.

There are numerous options out there, some cheap, some not so cheap - but it's difficult to tell which are actually reliable and won't lag with the controller. I'd like to be able to potentially connect a bluetooth keyboard as well.

Is it worth going with BT 5.0, or will BT 4.0 be ample in this case?

Thanks!

  • If you're happy with USB, I use this one with my Xbox Controller without issue: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07D8JJPG9/

    • Thanks! USB would probably work best for me as I could plug it in on the desk for better line of sight. Great to know this one has worked well for you - it's cheaper than I would have thought for one that works!

There's the 8Bitdo USB Wireless Adapter I would recommend you to check out, I've been able to connect my Xbox controller to it, shouldn't be any problems working with your controller.

As for BT 4v5, to quote Reddit:

BT 4.0 is still great for gaming. However, 5.0 does have some improvements that make gaming experience a little better. Primarily, battery life. Bluetooth 4.2 introduced BLE, which significantly improves battery life for Bluetooth devices. Headphones these days can last 14+ hours on a charge. BT 5.0 implements BLE as well. BT 5.0 also has better range (not significant for gaming unless you enjoy being 50+ feet away from your screen) and faster speeds.
However, you have to make sure both the BT transmitter from your source and the receiver (headphone, keyboard, etc) are BT 5.0 if you want to take advantage of it.

    • Interesting point re: the 8bitdo adapter - I did look at this briefly, but moved on assuming I wouldn't be able to connect other bluetooth devices to it (e.g. a keyboard). Looks like it's using Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, Class 2 (2.402GHz~2.48GHz). Gets very good reviews though for connecting controllers, so is perhaps worth another look.

Sounds like it's potentially between that or a BT 5.0 adapter - I've seen various models for $20 or less, so cheaper than the 8bitdo adapter but it's not clear which (if any) will actually work well.

  • Be cautious with the really cheap ones - I bought one of the random no name ones off ebay a few years ago and the range was so poor it wouldn't work if my controller was more than about a metre away from it.

  • Is there any bt5 adapter around?

I've been using this cheap Wavlink dongle that costs less than $6 for a while now
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Wavlink-Wireless-Bluetooth-Dual-Mo…

I used it with Xbox 1s game controllers (no issues), Windows Mixed Reality motion controllers (no issues) and Sony Bluetooth headphones (no issue with latency or audio quality).

The only struggle I found was using it with too many BT devices at once, so e.g using it with Mixed Reality controllers while paired to headphones causes the audio to drop-out, possibly due to a lack of available bandwidth.
