Google Pixel 3: Buy New or Used?

Hi, I am planning to buy a Google Pixel 3 64gb to use as a backup, especially for photos. Later, when the borders are open, I have a plan to give to my mum.

Should I buy a new mobile that costs $288 (from eBay) or a 2-year-old mobile that costs $150 (from Facebook Marketplace)? I am sure my mum will use it for the next couple of years. Budget wise I am okay with anyone.

I appreciate your suggestions?

There are reports of Pixel3's bricking, although the exact cause and number of cases is not known.

I would buy new in case there is a known hardware defect and you need some kind of warranty coverage to fix the device.

No debate, this is Australia, settled by the british. Its mum……

        Mom is American.

don't know about the pixel specifically but buying new is always better if you want it to last longer. who knows how badly they have flogged the battery, if the screen has burn in, how much life it has got left in it etc.

pixel 3 battery life from new already mediocre …

      used ones even more so

  • Short answer: neither.
OP I would avoid a 2 year old device…. since your gonna pass it to your folks who will be using it later, a fresh battery and some warranty on it for some peace of mind. That 2 Y/O battery life will be shockingly bad. I would put my money on something from Nokia or a decent mid-ranger from Xiaomi like the Redmi Note 10 if you want something under $300.

  • If your mum is going to be using it for a while (a few years or more like you said), I would buy the new one. The battery life on the second hand one would have degraded quite a bit, especially if the phone has been used a lot by the guy you're buying it off. I think it might be beneficial to buy a budget phone from last year or this year, instead of this old flagship.

    • Hi thanks for your reply. Yes, I will plan to buy a new one. One of the reasons I preferred Google pixel 3 is for its photos clarity and unlimited high-quality google photos storage option. Now, I will check other options too.

Pixel 3 will NOT be supported after October 2021, i.e. no more security or OS update after this date. I personally will not buy anything that guarantees NO updates in 3 months time. Especially you will pass the phone to your beloved mother, she may use it for Bank/Credit Card NFC payment, it's kinda un-safe to use an un-patched device.
