Great ice cream, highly recommend Lychee coconut.

    • I find most of their flavours quite good! Only thing that has disappointed me was their mint, as it isn't strong enough.

      • +1

Their mint is different. When i ordered mint i was asked if i tried it before as theirs as really different. After trying i didn't get it is it tasted like mint leafs as opposed to that delicious artificial sweet tooth paste flavor.

        Just tasted too real.

        • +3

Messina are hit and miss for me (some flavours are great, some are very average), but the pistachio praline is top notch.

          Where else in Sydney?

Rivareno - is awesome, hazelnut, chocolate, and raspberry in particular.

Mapo - is overrated imo, good but not great. Tried a couple of times. Not really proper gelato texture.

Cow and the moon - there is better gelato around but within Sydney it's near the top of the list

Ciccone and Sons - great classics (hazelnut, chocolate, etc), only been once so far though

          • @blazerunner: How does the pistachio compare to the pistachio praline, haven't had the pistachio before but i have had the pistachio praline.

            • +1

              @iwantaphone: It's good, I wouldn't avoid it necessarily, but the praline's better :P

Better pistachio at Rivareno imo, though not as strong as their other flavours.

Messina's pistachio praline has the textural contrast - crunchy candied nuts, slightly chewy paste - which for me makes it a lot more interesting to eat compared to the smooth pistachio.

Thank you, I now need to get a fix somewhere…

          • +1

@blazerunner: Agree with the Pistachio Praline.

I also like the Robert Brownie Jr when they have it.

    • Not the best, too sweet for my liking although the different flavours keep me interested

  • Pidapipo is so much better than this

    • +31

      I don't speak Melburnian

      • -3

Hell, I'll give it a shot:

I consider myself as a Gelato connoisseur as my taste buds are so well refined, that's why I can only enjoy the most finest Gelato, and will only indulge in Häagen-Dazs.

    • +7

And Piccolina is better than Pidapipo

    • +1

Big fan of the Lavezzi hazelnut and pistachio.

      • +1

Piccolina's pistachio and peanut butter is amazing

        • Y'all are spoiled down there… jealous!

          • -1

@blazerunner: They're really not. So many great gelato places in SYdney.

      Sooo True!!!!

Please note our e-vouchers incur a $2 processing fee. Please refer to our T&C's at gelatomessina.com/giftcards for full details.

    • +2

20% card processing fee for a $10 gc..is that even legal?

      • +1

No, its not. I cant be bothered checking the ACCC website, but I think a fixed fee is not legal in itself. Needs to be a percentage that is reflective of the actual cost incurred.

        • +4

$2 is the cost charged by the external provider for e-gift cards.

It's not strictly for the cost of payments.

Hence, it won't be against ACCC rules.

    • +11

Can't seem to purchase multiple cards at once too, effective Bonus credits after processing fee are:

spend $12 now, get $15 to spend in store (25% top up)
spend $22 now, get $32 to spend in store (45% top up)
spend $52 now, get $85 to spend in store (63% top up)
spend $102 now, get $180 to spend in store (72% top up)

      Still a good deal..

you are correct, was in a mid zoom meeting browsing this post

      • +7

As @neoika says below, it’s also useful to think about in terms of the discount rather than the “top-up bonus”

spend $12 now, get $15 to spend in store (20% discount)
spend $22 now, get $32 to spend in store (31% discount)
spend $52 now, get $85 to spend in store (39% discount)
spend $102 now, get $180 to spend in store (43% discount)

Still a great discount but maybe less of a difference between $50 and $100 discount than the “top up” might suggest.

      • You also need to factor in the opportunity cost of the points because of not using Liven or their own app for reward points.

Still a good deal, I agree.

        • thank you, my life for aiur

  • I love messina! Always get the specials and they have never been bad.

  • +1

Very healthy and tasty can’t go wrong with this deal with its bonus.

    • +8

      Very healthy…

      Hmmmmm

      • Mmmm yummm

  • Visit Gusto, if in Perth.

  • are they open for pick up from their stores in NSW does anyone know? how would you order also ?

    • My local is open when I drive past. Check their opening hours, I think they may have changed it like most places.

      • website shows opening hours, so id assume i can walk in and order and take away a tub then? might give them a ring to check

        • Yes I bought a 1.5L tub at my local just yesterday =_= such bad timing on my part lol

    • Wouldn't you just contact your nearest / most convenient store and ask?

    • Yep, you can go in and get takeaway from them

    • +1

      Penriff is open

    • All their stores are open and operating as usual, you would buy it like you usually would, either a cone, cup or takeaway tub.

  • Thanks OP. Glad they've undercut Liven and come out with a much better care package themselves.

  • How long are the gift cards valid? 3 years?

    • All e-vouchers are valid for 3 years and can only be redeemed at Messina stores (not for online purchases or classes)

    • +1

I thought it was illegal to have expiry dates on gift cards?

      • +2

No, 3 years is the minimum

    • +3

Is there risk of them getting bankrupt?

I still have little Dick Smith gift card.

  • +1

Seems like the gift cards are just a 5 digit number (qr code is the number as well). Thankfully these are in-store-only or else they could be stolen / brute forced very easily.

    • That seems very unlikely. That could just be the order number and the QR code is needed to buy.

      • Scanning the qr code shows that its only the number.

    • I reckon mines just been hacked by some bloke in Sydney 😂

  • +11

Anyone else worried that they're doing this because they're going under?

    • I live very near one and (anecdotally) the demand appears to still be there. Even though the streets are virtually empty as the pubs and restaurants are closed, people are still queuing in the rain for their product.

      • +5

I've bought delivery from them during lockdown too but offering 80% extra value is a lot of lost revenue. It feels like a last-ditch attempt to weather the storm.

    • 100%

    • I think it's fine to be skeptical, plus lockdowns in the two major cities is probably depleting their cashflow. However, their weekly specials offered online only seem to be selling pretty well, with some selling out.

      • So you are saying they can produce very small amount only for their weekly specials…
        Thank you for the warning.

But can I use this voucher for weekly specials? :)

        • I think they mean the online specials like the red velvet cookie pie, and other special tubs (eg viennetta) that are only available for pre order and pick up in store. They announce them and it's for sale a couple of days later at 9am and gone by 10am… there was one I wanted but I had slept in lol. They're not cheap either.

They still do weekly special flavours that you walk in store to get. Follow their insta to see what I'm talking about.

    • +2

Not really, they've done even 100% with the Liven care packages. Messina run a lot of promotions all the time.

They have invested very heavily into their own production of milk, nuts, chocolate, bakery, etc - there's no way they are going under.

  • Would have totally got a $100 gift card if they were closeer by, all the Melbourne stores are on one side of the city nowhere near the Easten suburbs

    • +1

      chapel st?

    • Their store on Smith St Fitzroy is a few minutes from the end of the Eastern Freeway pretty much putting them within 15-30 minutes of the entire Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Although Piccolina is also on Smith Street even closer to the freeway (and in Hawthorn) and more worthy of the trip.

      • I looked them up about 30 minutes from our place in very quiet traffic which is well out of our 5km even 10 and even 25km if restrictions stay active. Oh well

  • +1

Can these e-vouchers be added to the Messina app under the 'Voucher' section?

    • +7

i just bought one and it says after you buy it
"PLEASE NOTE, THIS VOUCHER CANNOT BE ADDED TO YOUR MESSINA APP, PLEASE KEEP IT ON YOUR EMAIL / PHONE AS A PDF. WE DO NOT OFFER APP POINTS ON VOUCHER PURCHASES."

Bit dirty but it was probably in the T&Cs which i definitely didn't read. What difference does it make once you're in a gelato induced stupor.

      • +2

Not in the T&Cs, thanks for being our guinea pig!

        • +4

          not all heroes wear capes

          • @StrangeDisposition: The T&Cs are a bit average anyway. It's not even clear under 3) if you need to spend the full value of the card in one single transaction.

            • @bozbargain: I definitely hope you don't need to spend the full value of the card in on single transaction as I was intending to buy the $100 one which would be $180…

              • +2

                @Alinnia:

It's not even clear under 3) if you need to spend the full value of the card in one single transaction.

It would appear you didn't read the page well enough:

"The lucky recipient can use it in instalments until the total has been reached"

                • @watwatwat: Great. I only read this page and the Gelato Messina webpage that the OP linked from here.

Thanks for finding that information. For people who want the source of where that information was quoted from it's here: https://gelatomessina.com/giftcards

                • @watwatwat: I didn't say that I read the page well or not. I said that their T&Cs are a bit average. It should be added to section 3) in their T&Cs. Now it only mentions this:

You may use your Gift Card to purchase goods at any Gelato Messina store. You cannot use the gift card for online purchases.

Your Gift Card may only be used to make purchases up to the value contained on the Gift Card. If you wish to make a purchase of goods for an amount that exceeds the value on your Gift Card, you must pay the excess using another payment method.

No change will be given where any value or credit balance remains onthe Gift Card following a purchase of goods.

Your Gift Card cannot be used to purchase another Gift Card.

The minimum amount a Gift Card can be topped up with is $10 instores and $20 online. E-Vouchers have no minimum purchase value.

            • @bozbargain: I had a quick glaze over the rules and you can spend in multiple transactions, but minimum $10 increments

              • @kiwiinsyd: Got the same type of gift card during a previous deal and successfully redeemed for triple scoops @ $8.80 a few times

  • [NSW, VIC, QLD & ACT] - States with physical stores.

  • +1

    Thanks, bought one.

The business must be running low on cash and needs to stockpile a bunch of money now.

  • +2

Good marketing! Bonus 80% sounds good, but less than 50% off.

  • Oooh - I love their gelato.

    I note this on the T&C - https://gelatomessina.com/giftcards
In section 3 - No change will be given where any value or credit balance remains onthe Gift Card following a purchase of goods.

Seems to indicate single use only per gift card.
Buy a $100 ($180) and it looks like you need to spend it in one go.

    Happy to be advised otherwise.

    • I think here "No change" means no cash out back to you.

Section 5: The value of any unused balance on the Gift Card after the date of expiry will be forfeited and will not be refunded, credited or transferred to any replacement or new Gift Card.

      • +1

As long as they allow multiple uses, then the only thing to worry about is if they are about to go into administration…

    • Pretty sure this is for multiple uses until the value is $0.. (but also noting @neoika's comment of no cash out)
"The lucky recipient can use it in instalments until the total has been reached"
      (from their https://gelatomessina.com/giftcards page)

    • They responded to a comment on their Insta confirming it doesn't have to be used in one go - "yep multiple times! imagine if we made you buy 6 x 1.5L in one go 😂"

  • +5

The main question with any gift card deal is: how likely that the issuer will go out of business?

I still remember the Dick Smith giftcards back when, heavily advertised by Coles, and whoops, bust. Coles did the right thing and refunded people who bought from them though.

    • given how hard they've been pumping their at home desserts lately, i'd say they're doing fine. selling out every week and always limited supply in limited areas.

    • If you buy a couple of tubs of their ice cream you will go through the money, reasonably, quickly anyway.

    • Agree , I don't know how this has so many upvotes .
      People like to gamble ?
Especially with Scomo about to mess up the opening .

      • Messina places are, still, open and we are coming up to Summer. I would risk some of the mid price options.

  • judging by the lines, particularly in warm weather, they're doing just fine. Thanks for the heads up angus!

  • +1

I like trying the new flavours they come up with. Luckily there's one within 5km, with warmer weather coming, this will be handy. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Just purchased this deal. Am i suppose to receive a email with a qr code?

    • same here. Been like 5 minutes and received nothing

    • Same thing here. Have dropped them a mail though

    • yeah same here, nothing yet, purchased last night. will wait till end of the day see if it eventually comes through. let us know if your vouchers go through.

      • got mine an hour ago. all good here.

    • I bought one at 4 yesterday and got it. bought another this morning as a gift and yet to get that one. might only go out during business hours/some manual process?
