Online Degrees? Legitimate or Not

Really been thinking about actually getting a degree. I won't go into my life story but worked odd jobs and such but feel I need a degree of some kind to help get better job/ career?

Are online courses/degrees just as well regarded as actually attending a local tafe or university?

I prefer to do my own pace online but still get a decent degree that will be looked at favourably by future employers?

Anybody here done any community service degrees or disability services? I hear they are in high demand these days?

Thanks people sorry i don't have much experience with study rules

  • If you do a degree online how would your prospective employer know?

Due to covid and a shift in demand for flexible study options, there are a lot of Go8 universities that are now offering degrees online.

Many students who have recently completed a degree have also had a substantial part of their degree online. I think a future employer would totally understand your desire to complete a degree online. Especially given the circumstances of COVID uncertainty

  • Hmmm, my university degree is delivered purely through online (it existed before COVID, which kinda made the transition easy). I think the degree itself is acknowledged and accepted by the body that does accreditation. As in with it, I can continue down the career path if I desire to do so.

I don't know about what's the go with where you want to head, the answer to your question, I think there are some at least.

Check with the university? Check the workload as well.

I work for a Disability Service Provider and can confirm there's a massive shortage of staff in this sector.
Whilst you can obtain a role without a certificate, your application (and understanding) will be looked upon more favourably if you have a cert 3 which I believe you can do online.
Example (depending on which one you are more interested in):
    * Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability)
    * Certificate III in Community Services
    In addition to:
    * First Aid certificate
    * Working with Children Check (WCC)

    • Thank you

      • but feel I need a degree of some kind to help get better job/ career?

This is your problem right here, lack of analytical thinking and no specific objective in mind. Some occupations require a degree and some do not. You need to create a list and see if there are any prerequisite degree required, if you can take a certificate course and gain employment in the area while getting credit and articulating up to a degree.

    • cert III are not degrees.

    • pay more and there won't be a shortage.

Online with a reputable university or Institution is no problem. Issues arise if you pay to do an online “course” with a diploma mill, which are basically sham institutions that charge $$ to give a bogus qualification. They’re usually offshore entities that offer too good to be true qualifications like 6 week MBAs with very little rigour or live lectures. Stay away from anything that seems too good to be true.

University of Phoenix online. It is Harvard of the online world. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson said it.

This I agree. You can tell by their offline presence (real campuses), acceptance criteria and the cohort you end up with. If you end up with career baristas doing Masters in Finance you might have serious issues.

      • You think a barista with a finance degree is any worse than the cowboys who control our financial world right now? Half of them diametrically disagree with the other half, but the world keeps on turning, the quagmire keeps getting murkier and murkier, the insider trading keeps getting ignored, rationale becomes more and more polarising, and yet we all still get paid.

        • Read this and you tell me

Half of them diametrically disagree with the other half

Only in North Korea types of one party states do you get 99% of people agreeing.

It is easy to poke holes in everything. Hope you find the bright side. Which is things keep on going.

        • Yowsers … anything you want to talk about?

  • For those that have been through it - how do you find so much of it online compared to face to face?
I have a short attention span, about … 2 microseconds, and hours of listening to people rambling out front loses me..

If you are a self starter and able to schedule your own time to get through the work go for it.

Usually it is those who think they can do it but place their social life first that ends up not meeting assignment deadlines, attending group work unprepared (much like face to face)..

That is why most high school students stuff up in University. No longer 9 - 3 and regimented. Wasting time on other stuff.

    • You need to be able to find the motivation otherwise you'll be paying a lot of money for failed courses. Online is tough. It really helps if you can find an online community that is all doing the same degree, so you have a few people in your courses you can discuss things with. Not feeling alone makes a massive difference to how likely you are to be able to stick with it the whole semester.

    200%

With covid etc, online is the new wave of study.
When we reach covid normal, face to face is the best.
Why pay FEE HELP for a degree remotely with minimal interaction? I would prefer the traditional Degree.

I would only be looking at Open Uni (OUA) for any type of online degree. They are legit as they work with universities around australia and have a pretty large range of degrees and units to choose from. I don't see how they would be any less regarded seeing as you'll be getting the certificate (and all the course content) from the uni and not oua (which is really just an external organiser). Just be aware that studying 'by distance' can challenging - but there are plenty of mature aged students doing it as well so you won't be alone.
