Wireless Microphone for Mobile Phone Video Recording?

Hi all,

I need to record some videos in an outdoor environment for work, and was hoping for some advice on what equipment I should use for the best results but keeping expenses to a reasonable amount.

I have a Galaxy S10, and whilst the camera quality is more than good enough for what I need, I want to use a wireless microphone as I know the built in camera picks up a lot of environment noises like wind etc. I cannot use anything that requires the 3.5mm headphone jack is that no longer works. Under the current circumstances and with the phone being out of warranty, I am not looking to get the phone repaired just for the headphone jack.

The plan is to purchase a mobile gimbal like the DJI OM 4 SE to keep things nice and stable, hence the preference for a wireless microphone solution so there is no microphone cable to get tangled.

I do have bluetooth headsets that I've used with the phone for calls, but none of them seem to work when recording in Open Camera, even after I have changed the audio source settings.

From my searches so far, it looks like the Rode VideoMic Me-C should work, but I was hoping for some confirmation or personal experiences before making the purchase as I think refunds/exchanges may be difficult with lockdown etc.

Does anyone have experience doing a similar thing to what I have described above? Anything suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • What sound do you want to record? Do you need to conduct interview whilst outdoor? Live music ? Sports ? outdoor /scenery?

    • Just a voiceover when walking through somewhere that has both indoor and outdoor areas. I'm just very conscious of background noise etc.

I could technically just add a narration when I'm back on the computer, but I was hoping to have it all done in one go without needing to edit the video too much.

      • In that case I would also recommend the rode wireless go + lav mic + dead cat.

Distance of the sound source to the mic would be fairly stable so you should have high chance of getting stable and consistent audio.
