Unlocked 4g Dongle

I just signed up to the half price 4g Felix unlimited data plan sim and was looking for a good dongle to whack it in. Haven’t had much luck finding any quickly delivered unlocked dongle/wingles online. I see Officeworks has a few but I haven’t been able to find any conclusive evidence regarding if they’re unlocked or not.

Felix uses the vodafone network which uses the rarer 850 band that not many dongles seem to supply but my area gets good coverage so I’m happy to take a punt regardless of support.

So far I’m leaning towards one of these no name unbranded eBay options (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-USB-Dongle-4G-LTE-WIFI-Hotspo…). I live in NSW so can’t go out and browse in person unfortunately.

Appreciate any other suggestions you all may have!

  • You can unlock the Telstra dongles if you pay something like $70

    • Ebay ad says that one listed is unlocked.

  • Just buy a Vodafone branded one.

  • Most of the Huawei ones are easily unlocked by flashing the default firmware. Do a google search.

  • Since Felix is limited to 20Mbps you can get away with a really cheap optus or vodafone wingle/dongle sometimes in the range of $10 ish. I trialled Felix last month and due to dumb-tower-connections near me I couldn't get a reliable fast connection on 4G to get over 10Mbps, sometimes dropped to 0.5-1Mbps even on a new flagship phone. It was more consistent turning off 4G and just connecting to 3G/H+ with 5 bars then I would at least get a consistent 5-10Mpbs. I had the same experience using my smartphone, and an AC800s and an old optus E8372 wingle 'car hotspot' that seemed to work with enough Vodafone bands… YMMV.

The point I'm trying to make is that depending on your local towers & tech & hardware options you might want to see if 3G+ is 'good enough' for your usage needs, or you might have an old spare 3g/4g phone that you could use to tether / hotspot, at least then it's in a phone and you can send some texts and make/receive a call on it once a month so that you don't get stung by their lame attempts at stopping/cancelling your service. If you don't have a spare phone you could stick it in your main phone for an hour to do some tests on 3G etc to get a feel for it.

    Good luck.
