WHICH 75" FALD $2.5-3k? Sony 75" X90J vs Hisense 75" U8G or 85" non-FALD (e.g. Samsung 85" Q70A)

What are people getting for 75" FALD around $2.5-3k?

I am deciding between
75" Hisense U8G (FALD, VRR, 120Hz, eArc, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, 3 year warranty)
75" Sony X90J (FALD, VRR, 120Hz, eArc)
85" Samsung Q70A (non-FALD — but contrast 7,398:1 is higher than X90J, VRR, 120Hz)

Specifications wise the winner would be Hisense???

  1. Hisense U8G
  2. Samsung Q70A
  3. Sony X90J

Anyone else have these TV's??

PS. Also getting a soundbar - was leaning towards Samsung Q700A for the 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup and the cashback with TV offer from Samsung….

Quite a few things to point here,

    • According to some local reviews, the Hisense U8G is nothing like the US model. IPS panel with no HDMI 2.0. Meh Brightness and bad contrast
    • Samsung X90J supports Dolby Vision and eARC, so you should be able to get Atmos
    • 85" Egde lit TVs will look like dog crap in all dark scenes. Unbelievable/unwatchable blooming or it crushes the entire scene the suppress the blooming. Samsung are known for crushing blacks. This is easily a deal breaker.

The Sony X90J is the clear winner of the bunch. If you want an 85", save for it's version. If you would consider other 85" TVs, the Samsung Neo QLED QN85A has a VA panel and also worth considering of you don't mind losing Dolby Vision.

    • Makes sense, thank you for the insight! 👍

Can't comment on the Hisense as I haven't looked into it much but I've found a forum comparing it to the x90J which isn't promising for the Hisense:

Despite the Q70A having good contrast it likely isn't comparable with the fully array dimming in the X90J. If you want a Samsung, Q90 and the QN85A are moreso the equivalent to the X90J but also cost more. I'm not sure if you missed it but the X90J does have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos so spec wise it's on par with the Hisense (minus the 3 year warranty).

I recently moved from a 3 year old Samsung mid range 75inc (no full array) and it had bad black uniformity that got worse over time and I've been told that this has only become worse with the current mid range models. I recently bought an 85inch X900H (the 2020 version of the X90J) and hands down it's a better TV overall. I will say I've encountered a few software problems but I believe the X90J solved all of these.

Hope this helps and all the best for your purchase.

    • Thank you! I missed that part of info! 👍

I can only comment on the 55 inch models. I was tossing up between a 55 Hisense U8G and either the Sony X85J or 90J. I bought the 90J on the weekend because a) great reviews for the U8G were not for the Australian model and b) the Sony has Google TV. It is a beauty, especially in comparison to the 12 year old 40 inch Samsung. Side note -the X950H is still more expensive than the newer 90J as it has a wider gamut.

75" X90J really hits the sweet spot for price vs performance - has all the features you need minus VRR, which hopefully they patch in through a update soon.. Unfortunately for me looking at 85" panels, Sony have skipped making this screen size and have pushed people towards the X95J which IMO is not worth the money… 85" X85J and X95J only..
