Knock-off XBox Controller

Does anyone have any experience with those cheap knock-off xbox controllers on ebay?

I will be mainly using it for PC gaming since most newer PC titles only support xbox controller (just plug and play without having to remap the whole keys/use joytoykey).

The cheapest official controller I found was on Amazon which was $30 excluding shipping. I'll probably end up getting that since I'm not too optimistic about those knock-offs..

IMO you are far better off spending a few more $$$ to get a real one that works properly

    $37 here incl shipping

Almost all my experiences with aftermarket controllers for any console is they're almost always universally crap. Even the supposedly upper market pricier ones always seem to have deadzone issues and problems that don't exist in the official controllers.

+1 to the recommendation to get a real one.

Keep in mind though if you want to use an wireless Xbox 360 controller with your PC, you will need to get one of the wireless PC Adapters, since the Xbox uses a propriety wireless format. One of these will allow you to hook up to four controllers to your PC. These are packaged with the 'Wireless Xbox 360 controllers for windows'. These are really hard to find seperately. There are some knockoff adapters floating around (I have one), but I remember it was a real a pain finding proper drivers.

Here's an allright price for a official controller + the adapter:

Alternatively, if you want to get a wired 360 controller (a little cheaper) they supposedly work instantly just via plugging them into the USB.

Additionally, wireless PS3 controllers use bluetooth, so you can set these up a little easier without so much faffing about. But most PC games now seem to have pre-set settings for the 360 controller - which makes it much better for simple plug and play without needing to set the controls manually.

The problem isn't to get a Controller that works on a PC. The issue is that a lot of the new PC games are coming out with absolutely no PC Controller support!

We have a few of these silly games now - Rugby League Live and Star Wars The Force Unleashed are 2 examples. One of them kind of works with standard PC Controllers, but the other refuses to acknowledge anything other than Keyboard control unless there is a "X-Box Controller" plugged into the USB.

  • Thanks for the links and insights, I'll check out ozgameshop after I get back from work later on.

  • I'm in the exact same situation, and have to make the same decision.

EB Games have wireless and wired controllers second hand. The wired ones are only $14, but the wireless ones are too expensive (might as well buy brand new elsewhere)…

then use "find it in store" link to see where the stock is located

You can get the Wireless Gaming Receivers from eBay for about $9-10 (not genuine, but never heard of any issues with these.

In the end what I am doing is (trying) to buy used genuine ones from eBay. That seems the most economical way.

  • Oh - another way to solve it, but much more complex to set up, is to use an X-Box Controller Emulator

    Here's a link to one

  • you can banned for using non genuine controllers

    • Banned from WHAT exactly? These are for use on a PC.

    • I've never heard of this at all. Can you quote your source of this information?

  • I guess I will check EB games this weekend and if all else failed will try ozgameshop. Thanks all.

  • Hi guys,

One of the products we sell at ConsoleJazz is an imported Wireless Xbox controller - http://www.consolejazz.com.au/wireless-controller-for-xbox-3…

It's really challenging trying to beat off the stigma of the imported controllers, we are committed to the quality of the controllers we source and back them with a 30 day money back guarantee so you can try them for yourself. It's a good way to try one of the cheaper alternatives and if your not happy we give your money back.

We are also based in Melbourne, so the shipping will take a day or two, not the 10 or so days you'll have to wait if you buy from an overseas seller.

    Cheers
