Cheap SIM-Only BYO plan (incl international calls)

Looking for a cheap SIM only plan with international calls for a friend. Any suggestions?

So far I've thought of two ideas:
1) Cheapest SIM only with international calls is TPG Super Value Medium ($17.99/month or $14.99 if bundled) - $550 credit which can also be used for international calls
2) Any other cheap SIM only plan such as Live Connected's Tribe 11 ($10.99/month for $500 credit). Does not include international calls, but with a smart phone you could have Skype and use Skype to make international calls and have Skype be using up internet data. Cost-wise I would think the per minute rate on Skype would either be similar or better. Quality wouldn't be as good though.

The inclusion of international calls is really just to avoid bill shock, as my friend is thinking of having to call overseas once in a while while outside only occasionally.. otherwise there's always Skype. Option 3 could be:

3) Just have a Lebara or Lycamobile SIM handy and just swap sim cards out.
Oh, and what about 4?
4) Hello Mobile - They seem to have decent rates for international. And they have a local mobile plan with 0c/min calling. Just pay 29c flagfall!

  • How much international calls does he need? Would he consider 2 yr contract?

    • No as I said international calls is more so to avoid bill shock. On any other plan besides the TPG one (lets say for example the Live Connected Tribe 11), a 20 minute international call could result in the monthly phone bill tripling from $11 per month to $30ish per month. It's not a huge huge priority and it's more so for that "once in a while" situation where she might need international calls.

2 year contract no, because she's not sure if she'll be staying in this country after 12 months, so certainly not a contract. The longest contract she'd consider is about a 3-6 month contract.

  • Hi ronnknee, we've just discovered http://freedomcalls.com.au/ - I'm not their rep, but their service is pretty good to date. Can't call some international mobile numbers, but the landlines seems OK. Voice quality is on & off. It's basically calling international charged at a local mobile's rate - so if you can take advantage of your monthly credit, it works out to be pretty cheap. Good luck with it! Hope this helps.
