  • My mower takes 440mL, and I buy the Briggs & Stratton stuff from Bunnings for $10. She's due…

Will an opened 5L bottle last me 10 oil changes?

Or, what about lasting at least at another 2 oil changes? (if I consider breaking even on cost but wasting oil)

    • So long as you keep the bottle in a dry place and preferably indoors, I don't see why not. I keep my auto oils in a storage cupboard inside.

My mower takes 550ml once a year so looking at getting a few years out of this myself.

      • Apparently additives/detergents start to deteriorate after six months, but I'm not sure if that applies to stuff still in the opened bottle or oil sitting in a car

      • Thanks for the post OP.

Decided to go with a 1L for $14 - I'll get two years of changes, will have a fresh bottle for 2023/24 when I'll probably start doubting this opened 5 bottle. Not sure the best approach, but I'll side with the least regrets option (but each to their own 👍)

        • All good. Happy mowing!

    • some Briggs also use 5w30, if you have some lying around from car engine oil https://www.briggsandstratton.com/eu/en_gb/support/faqs/brow…

      • Yeah most Victa mowers use those engines. Pretty sure I have some, good to know. Now have to figure out which spark plug I need, good to habitually change those too

  • As someone that is into Tribology, pretty much any small engine will run on any engine oil you have laying around. No need to use anything fancy or specific.

SAE 30 monograde can easily be substituted by any 5W-30, 10W-30, 15W-40 etc in case you have something already in the garage.

    • 10w40 too?
I would think so given our climate

      • Yes, these things are not really sensitive to viscosity at all. I have at various times run 5W-30, 15W-40 and others. I usually use what is left over from a 5L bottle I would buy for an oil change for my cars.

The only things I would avoid in these engines is super high viscosity stuff like 20W-50 or 10W-60 as well as modern full synthetics mainly due to expense and extra detergency that might dislodge some "helpful" deposits.
